Computer died after installing an HPphotosmart printer.

Has anyone else had this problem?
H installed the printer, and it was working fine.
About bedtime, the computer starts demanding the correct version of windows disk. (looks like it was trying to reload the printer software).

I couldn’t get the message to go away, so in a fit, I rebooted the computer. Except nothing happens. the pretty blue light goes on, but the computer ain’t thinking.

I’m kind of distracted with some other issues today, so can anyone tell me if I am missing the obvious? H has a bad cold and isn’t up to dealing with this right now. Besides, it crashed on my watch, so I feel like I should fix it.

you disconnected the printer before rebooting, right??

Have you tried disconnecting the printer, and then turning all the power off to the computer. Wait 2 minutes and restart?

OMG, you guys are brilliant. I am so thrilled and thankful.

Now that I have disconnected the printer and it boots up (thank you a thousand times), what do you suggest next?

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove any of the HP printer software you might have installed and reboot.

Then, install the printer software and printer again but pay close attention to the instructions including the part where it says exactly WHEN to connect the printer cable to the computer.

Yes, ucsducladad has the trick…the part where it says exactly WHEN to connect the printer cable to the computer.

For some unknown (to me) you usually have to install the software first, and somewhere down the line you connect the hardware. This happened to me with a character recognition scanner.

Thanks, I will be out of town for a couple days, but will try the reinstall when I get back.

My husband was suitably impressed when he saw that the computer was up again! He will be in awe if I can get the printer to work. Many thanks.
