I am trying to create a list of schools that do computer music research. The schools I have found so far are Columbia, Princeton, Stanford, and the University of Rochester. Does anyone know any other schools?

First, you’re in the totally wrong forum. Check the music forum.

But ironically, yes, I do know of some other schools, as my husband’s getting a PhD in music composition right now, and his research is in computer music at LSU. He presented a paper at ICMC (International Computer Music Conference) in Copenhagen last year, and was one of the few sound guys at SIGGRAPH. He’s more or less helped build from scratch a few big electronic music studios-- ICAST at LSU, REMLABS at Rice, and UW-Milwaukee. Stanford is also big, as you mentioned, and Cincinnati is trying to expand their lab. Stanford’s more experimental than compositional. Also look into Cal Arts. Also, University of Texas.

Conferences to check out to find more schools and to find out about who’s pretty active in the community… ICMC, as previously mentioned… Also LaTex Music Festival, held at REMLABS.

I can ask him later for more schools, if you’d like… What sort of computer music are you looking at?

I am actually interested in the ee side of computer music, and not really into composing music. I looked through the ICMA site and found this [ICMA: Resources](http://www.computermusic.org/resourcesf.php) but a bunch of the links are broken. Anyway, I’ll look into some of the other schools you mentioned. Thanks!

If you’re more into the tech stuff, my husband says studying at Tulane with Tae Hong Park would be good. Princeton studying with Perry Cook (president of ICMA-- this guy doesn’t take undergrads as students, though) and CCRMA at Stanford would be good places to study. He says that there are others, but that those are the guys/labs he’s most familiar with.

[Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics](http://ccrma.stanford.edu/)

Are you looking into undergrad, or grad? I would presume undergrad…

Well, right now I guess I’m trying to figure out which schools would have some summer undergrad research opportunities for next year. I am going to a freshman in the fall. I knew of Tulane, but I didn’t know they had a computer music lab. I remember watching a video of the who’s who’s in the computer music world, with a panel of speakers at Tulane. It was people like John Chowning, Max Matthews, and Julius Smith.

I am also just interested in looking at what current research is going on. I like to spend my free time reading about research, because they are some really cool things going on out there.

Anyway, thanks to you and your husband for all the help!

I’d look into schools with strong music/art and computer departments. ie Toronto, CMU,
