Computer Science Class During Summer

Is there any computer science class available during summer at the UChicago? I am very interested in learning some fundamentals of computer science, programming, and etc.

I don’t know is CS is offered, though.

UnaLove, appreciated very much for the exact information I am looking for. Thanks.

That’s the link to what classes are scheduled to be offered this summer in the computer science department.

Summer CS, which usually covers a standard first year course in Java or C++ intensively over eight to nine weeks, is offered at just about any elite. As long as the school is roughly on par with Chicago, you should not have any trouble transferring the credit. Consequently, if you want to get a leg up in CS before starting your freshmen year, I would encourage you to look somewhere other than Chicago, as Hyde Park is pretty dead in the summer. This is especially so if you are going to UChicago for college, in which case you will already be there for three to four years. Take the opportunity to sample a city you have never lived in, or perhaps otherwise never will, as well as a different academic environment!

I would consider though what is the specific programming language that is being taught, and how does it relate to what you find on the syllabi or future courses you might be interested in. For instance, if you are going into math related field like quantitative finance you will want to do you first year in C++ directly, whereas Java is more par for the course as a starting point for actual CS majors. Also, try to find somewhere where introductory CS is taught by a full fledged faculty member, rather than an adjunct or graduate student (all too common in the summer).

I would also suggest that you save big bucks and do something closer to home, if that’s an option. I don’t think the UChicago nameplate of the program is worth it if you just want to do CS.
