Computer Science College Application

Hi,

My son’s currently studying GCE A-Levels and he’s applying to several US universities to enroll in something like a Computer Science or Computer Engineering programme. His choices, in order of preference, are UC Berkeley, UIUC, UW-Seattle, UCLA, GaTech, UW-Madison and Purdue.

He’s a decent student, having scored 10 A’s out of 11 in his Year 11 public exams here in Malaysia, and have just received his SAT’s results where he got 2,100. His extracurriculars however, are not much to shout about.

I’ve noticed that some universities ask for high school transcripts from Year 9 onwards, and that’s where I’m getting worried. He attended a very competitive high school where the internal exams are deliberately made difficult, and this has resulted in pretty bad results for these exams.

My question is, how will these internal exams results affect his chances of being accepted at the schools mentioned? How do the universities rate the prospective students based on non-standard testing results, particularly from overseas?

Can he just submit his external public exams results and not bother with the internal transcripts? He also scored 7 A’s out of 8 in his Year 9 public exams, so it may be only Year 10 that is the problem (no public exams in Year 10).

Or would the strategy be to submit all transcripts (for both internal and external exams) for all the years?

Any ideas?

Thanks.
