Looking to find Computer Science Programs where class sizes are small and focused on teaching. Son is more of a hands-on learner than theoretical, as his patience for the latter can be trying. Aiming to stay on East Coast.
He has applied to a handful of schools that run the gamut from small LAC (e.g., TCNJ & Lafayette) to Large Universities (e.g., U of Delaware).
Have been struggling to motivate him to find more schools (we’d like to apply to 2 more in the 1/15 - 2/1 timeframes) so that we have a diverse set of programs to choose from.
Programs thinking of applying to before deadlines:
Virginia Tech
Rochester Institute of Technology
Clark University
Rowan University
Bottom Line: Looking for solid programs that put Teaching first.
Certainly look at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Beautiful campus, nice part of Worcester, mid-size national university, ranked something like #60 in USNWR national university ranking. It is as hands-on and project-oriented as any school. It uses a quarter system, and students take 3 classes at a time. Deadline is Feb. 1. It awards a respectable amount of merit aid but is still pretty expensive in most cases.
I like the schools on your list (don’t know much about Rowan). VT students love the school and their college experience. I’m also a fan of Clark. I think RIT is a good fit for what you are looking for. Good luck!
Class sizes can often be seen in the college’s online class schedule.
Due to the increasing popularity of CS, class sizes may be larger than they used to be, or the CS major and CS courses may be at maximum departmental capacity and may have to turn away students or require a higher admissions bar to enter the major.
