What schools have computer science programs similar to Pitt
Lots of colleges have computer science programs.
Do you have a geographic preference?
Do you have the grades to get accepted directly into a CS program?
northeast is the preference - but want a dedicated comp sci program, not one that is engineering focused. We already toured RPI, Case Western, Pitt and McGill - will be going to Binghamton too. He has the grades but was not very interested in RPI and Case Western as he felt the focus was more on engineering and not on comp sci
Someone I know looking at those same programs is very enamored of Northeastern’s CS program and has visited twice.
Many liberal arts schools have computer science which is not part of an engineering program.
Tufts has a CS program with two degree programs, one through the School of Liberal Arts and the other through the School of Engineering.
Look at the US News And World Reports rankings for comp sci grad schools. The undergrad programs will also be stellar- and perhaps a student can take some grad level courses as an undergrad. So many schools across the country. I just looked at the list, Carnegie Mellon is currently listed as #1 but U of Pittsburgh is only tied for #52. Most schools will have computer science with the other sciences, humanities and social sciences and are not the same major as computer engineering (or other names) in engineering. I assume many/most of them have an entire building dedicated to CS alone and not in conjunction with any other department. That’s the standard I’m used to.
Are you looking for an average school, such as “Pitt”, or are you looking at a top twenty school? So many great overall schools have top notch math (important as advanced math can increase CS outside the box thinking) departments as well. If you live near Pittsburgh you can head west a bit and encounter many great schools within driving distance. Or you can have an east coast mentality and look at those schools. You don’t need to head to the great west schools.
In short- so many schools will offer at least as many opportunities as the schools you list. Your son needs to look at the overall caliber of the campus and his comfort zone for campus culture.
I would highly second Northeastern - it’s actually the first school in the US to have a college specifically dedicated to CS and has a great teaching focus.
WPI may be a bit too techy, but it has a very good program as well. RIT would be more of the same category.
If you’re looking for a school that isn’t very tech focused, Northeastern, BU, Tufts, UMass Amherst, U of Rochester would be good to look into.
How about UMass Amherst?
