Computer Software: WOW

I was just looking thru opportunities that Brown will offer and I was quite amazed and shocked. Brown seems to offer many extremely expensive software for free…I really couldn’t believe it but I suppose it does. There are two things that I couldn’t understand…When it says VPN, does that mean that you can only use that software when u re on campus? And do other Ivy League schools offer such stuff(i mean software distribution for free)? I mean WOW…That list even has things like Photoshop, Office, Mathematica etc…!!!

When you’re off campus, you log into the VPN client which “masks” you as though you’re on campus and you can then use the software.

Is that the “legal” way or is it just a way out?

Completely legal. That’s why we have it setup.

oh ok…=)) thank you modestmelody…Its IT services can just be a huge reason for choosing Brown…=)) As I have asked before, does anyone know if similar stuff are distributed at other top schools (or Ivy leage ones)?

Also what about P2P? Do they let you use P2P software on campus?

If you’re caught by the RIAA or MPAA you will get a letter and I’ve gotten 2 already when I was on campus. Brown students have been sued in the past and they’re not going to help you. They won’t however, block those services.

Just use MoBlock or PeerGuardian and you’ll be fine.

most schools with large endowments offer stuff like this. it’s not exclusive to brown.
