Computers For Engineers

What computer would you recommend for engineering students?

Cornell’s engineering website has some advice re: computers. See

http://www.engineering.cornell.edu/student-services/academic-advising/orientation/computer.cfm

That’s way outdated odyssey.

I’m pretty sure engineering students know better than anyone else what kind of computer to get and primarily you really just need it for internet access and typing papers and stuff. So my recommendations:

Intel Core 2 Duo processor (or AMD)
2 GB of RAM
1.73 GHz processor
15" or smaller laptop (a 17" is too big from what I’ve experienced)
10/100Base-T ethernet
802.11 b/g wireless
4-6 USB ports
Microsoft Office
CD-RW/DVD drive

Peripherals:
External HD
1GB portable USB drives
speakers
mouse
printer (laserjets are awesome)
headphones

is a laptop necessary? I mean…there isn’t even wireless everywhere, is there? I got a pc last year for school–and it’s great, so wouldn’t it be fine to just get a flatscreen moniter?

Yeah, you are fine with a desktop. There is wireless over most of the campus now (even on North) but I used my desktop primarily (got a laptop too but rarely use it).
