<p>i want to buy my computer at our local computer store where my parents have bought computers for years. What is necessary for the network and what software needs to be installed. What are nice options?<br>
Also, will they service my computer at Chicago if I don’t buy it from their store?

<p>they can definately service it (and so can many of your housemates I would assume)</p>
<p>All you really need is a 10/100 network interface (or wireless but they really WANT you using the wired connection when in your dorm room)</p>
<p>The rest is completely optional but dont cheap out. You may well be using this computer for the next four years so spend some extra $$$ to get a desktop you wont have to replace during that time.</p>
