Conan O'Brien Talks About Failure

Here are some snippets from his Graduating Class of 2011 Commencement speech at Dartmouth. Good stuff.

I doubt anyone is going to watch it - can you summarize what were the “good stuff” pieces?

It’s only four minutes. It’s funny and has some solid words of wisdom.

I watched it yesterday. It was very funny and to summarize he says you can fear failure or not but disappointment is coming, it is difficult but you can come out the other side. He also says that we become our best selves by failing to become our heroes. In striving to be the person we idealize, we become a better version of ourselves and the next generation of people who are idealized. He used the example of Johnny Carson wanting to be Jack Benny and failing. David Letterman failed at being Johnny Carson and Conan failed at being David Letterman.

Thought it was a great speech. Unfortunately, had to go to my daughter’s high school graduation with very mediocre speaker later the same day.
