Concerning money

I will be double majoring in Philosophy and Computer Science, and have primarily set my eyes on out of state private Liberal Arts Colleges, and one of the Ivies, with a few safety instates.

Today, my mom told me she will realistically be able to contribute 10k a year, and only for four years. While I understand that the Ivies and LAC’s are known for generous financial aid, I’m not sure if it would be enough. I was wondering if this would be possible with me working an average paying job.

EDIT: I don’t want to do ROTC. I have considered however, enlisting in the military, serving my time while saving up money, and attending college afterwards.

That is all going to depend on what the school calculates your EFC at.

go to this link: [FinAid | Calculators | Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and Financial Aid](http://www.finaid.org/calculators/finaidestimate.phtml)

use the institutional method – and ask you mom for correct figures. If she would rather not share the info with you (which is perfectly understandable) ask her to input the numbers. make sure the numbers are accurate – use last years tax forms.

it should give you a EFC “Expected Family Contribution”. That is the number you will be expected to pay to attend the school. The difference between you EFC and $10,000 is the amount you will need to fund on your own.

once you know that amount, take a look at the colleges. Some colleges meet 100% of the demonstrated need (that is the difference between the cost of the school and the EFC) and some only meet part. some meet it with lots of loans, some with all grants.
