Concerns regarding transfer update

I’m enrolled in more classes than I plan on taking. One of my classes basically did a bait and switch, removing the highly-rated professor after enrollment ended and replacing with an unknown/part-part-part time person.

not cool. So I’m probably gonna drop that class, but I want to try it out first. In any case, I can drop at least two classes and still meet the 60 unit requirement. If I list a class in my update as IP, and later drop it - can it influence my chances of acceptance? Will they even notice? Actually, I’m not even sure if this is part of the update. I’d like to know if it is.

Also, I listed all the classes I enrolled for Spring in the transfer app, but not all of those classes are on my current schedule because I’ve switched them out and dumped redundant courses. How would an admissions officer view this?

A bigger concern of mine is the way my GPA appears on my official CC transcript. My college idiotically counts classes not transferable to UC/CSU in the GPA. These include remedial classes. So while my real transferable GPA is 3.8-9 (all A’s Fall like a boss) the GPA on the sheet is 2.8 or something terrible. It just looks bad. And the classes that aren’t transferable appear legitimate - i.e, media 101, broadcast journalism etc…etc. There is no way to expunge or convert worthless courses to pass/fail, they are listed right next to UC-accepted courses.

Do they really have the capacity to sift through the legit classes and count your GPA?

They only consider ASSIST certified courses. That’s it. If it’s not transferable, they don’t consider it.

If you list a class as IP and then drop it, you have to contact each individual UC and update them of the schedule changes and it may negatively impact your application, depending on the course. If it’s some BS course, then it probably won’t matter. If it’s a major pre-req, then it will weigh heavily. Either way, they must be informed.

If you plan to drop a class, then just don’t add it to your ‘planned classes for spring’ list in the transfer update. If it’s a major pre-req or a required UC eligibility course (math/english), you shouldn’t be planning on dropping it. Let them know later if you stick with it.

Your classes listed for Spring must mirror (identically) your actual course schedule. You will be able to update your transfer app until March, so there is no reason to have deviations. If you are accepted to a UC, and they see that the courses you reported differ from those on your transcript, they can (and often do) rescind.

2 and 3 are confusing. I’m definitely will not be taking all of the courses I listed for Spring in my November app. When they look at my current Spring schedule, and see some (but not all) listed courses, will the notice? And no the classes are not major pre-reqs. Only general humanities classes to meet the 60 units.

basically, my transfer update is going to look 1 or 2 classes different than my november app. Is this a problem? Because based on your response I am unsure. Also, what is this March deadline? I thought transfers only had till January to update? Now it’s march?

just do whatever you wanted, if there are changes, just give them a call, and yes you dont have to care about non transferable classes unless you applied to USC.

Do you start classes before Jan 31? Since I start on Jan 18 but the update isn’t due until the 31st, I am waiting until about the 24th or so to do my update. Then I will know for sure which classes I am taking for sure. And I can put them down as In Progress instead of Planned. If you start classes after Jan 31 then you must put down as Planned your best guess on what you will be taking.

so for clarity, if I click “submit” on the update form I can still edit it until January 31st? When do they look at the updates? They must already be sorting out applicants now.

Yes. As long as it’s before Jan 31 you are OK. Think of submitting multiple drafts of a paper but the latest and most recent is the one that will count. Although, I believe you can submit after Jan 31 those schools might not take into account a late submission.

and they don’t look at the submission until after january?

I would say yes. It’s similar to the filing period of Nov 1-30. Someone can submit the application on Nov 12 but it doesn’t mean that they’ll look at until a certain date. I’m positive you have until Jan 31 to update as many times as you need to do and they will only look at your latest submission.

Of course you could always call and confirm yourself but I’m just applying simple logic so it would seem they wouldn’t look at it until after Jan 31.

how important is the little update box? i wish it had more space. i already know my grades but im kind of uncertain as to what to write.

Yeah so I updated my applicant, and I tried testing out to edit it and there doesn’t seem to be an option? What’s the deal? I need to update it again to drop the classes so WTH? !!!

You can always go back to edit it before the deadline. Thats what i heard many times and many people say that. Try to click on TAU and submit it again.

if not, dont freak out  you can always give them a call. No big deal bro.

I’d like to ask a question related to this as well. I’ve already sent in the update and I plan on taking two courses which I recorded. However there is another course I want to take which isn’t a pre-req or even UC transferable. And I don’t know if I can get into the class since I’m waitlisted. My spring semester starts in early February so I can’t squeeze it in before the deadline so what should I do in the event that I do get into the third class which is a non-transferable course?

In the same vein: For the update, did you all list your Spring 2012 classes as PL (planned) or IP (in progress)?

thanks.

Briceis: The update is due on Jan 31. If you start your spring classes before the 31st then they are in progress. If you start your spring classes after Jan 31, then they are planned. I start my classes on Jan 18. So I am waiting until the 19th so I can legitimately say that my spring classes are “In Progress”. There is no need to do your update now…just do it before the 31st.
