I’ve written three essays so far: one is about an interaction with a cockroach (shows my creativity and it’s a clever topic), the other really shows who I am through the use of quotes and the last one is my victory in overcoming my eating disorder (really emphasizes the positives/strength of my character).

I’m stuck. I like all three of them. What should I do?

Without reading your essays, it is hard to say. Quirky essays (like your cockroach one) can be fun but unless it really says something about you, you may want to use it as a supplemental. The essay about your eating disorder is probably powerful but unless you can keep it somewhat light hearted, you really don’t want to be overly depressing. It sounds to me like your second essay may be the best choice for a Common App essay. Particularly since you feel like it really shows who you are.

The other essays may be able to be reworked into supplemental essays. For example, some schools will ask you to tell how you will be a good addition to their student body through use of your experiences. This might be the place to talk about overcoming your eating disorder and strength of character.

Also, which schools you are applying to may impact the essay you use. Liberal colleges, may prefer the clever, more offbeat essay. Ask your essay readers (English teachers, Guidance Counselors) which one they like.

Good Luck.
