Ok, I know I am supposed to follow up with my interests. But, I don’t understand this:
My friends have all decided to participate in the school’s skit and float building. I am not interested, as I would rather prep for the PSAT, AMCs, APs, research through scholarships, do things with my ECs, etc. My friends however argue that participating in school skits and float building indicates involvement in school, which colleges would value (they say) more than any EC. So, they urge me to participate. Im not interested!! What do I do???

just because you randomly help once in a float doesn’t mean it’s going to exponentially help your chances. I doubt colleges are going to pay attention to random things you do here and there. but if you’re interested in actually helping, go for it.

Do things because you want to do them, not because you think colleges will like them. It’s very possible you may do a bunch of things that “you think” a college will “like”, and the college will reject you anyway. Might as well have done what you wanted to do and have fun with it, ya?

If you already knew you are supposed to follow up your interests, why did you even bother to ask? Nobody can ask you to do what you don’t want to.

Your friends are wrong. MIT and most other competitive schools value quality over quantity. I forced myself to build a float which was no fun to help my application is likely to come through in the application (particularly at the interview). In which case, it cannot help you.

Thanks, alot Mikalye
