Unless you are contacted by someone from some department about your enrollment in a class, you will be automatically enrolled after doing the pre-enrollment.
Check if you are still enrolled in all the classes you pre-enrolled.

by “Not necessarily, but most of the times: YES”, do you mean that sometimes students don’t get the classes they pre-enrolled in because they don’t fulfill the requirements or do you mean that by some bad fluke of the system/classes got too full, they get kicked out of the classes they want?

so to clarify, the schedule in the Student Center on Aug 24 (without me doing anything) will be my official schedule of classes i go to on Aug 25 unless i add/drop something?

It depends on what class it is. For example, if you are planning to take a communication class, they would have a priority on who can enroll in the class (based on which college you are from and whether you are a junior or senior, etc). Another thing that could happen is that somehow a class that wasn’t planned to be offered in that semester was up on the website, and they finally realized it and took it down. Or there weren’t a lot of people registering for the class, so they cancel the class, but you’ll always be informed whenever they change something.

I’m a bit confused… On the Student Center, it says:
“Drop - Delete Record: 08/09/2010 A class dropped on or before this date will be deleted from your academic record.”

After that, drops would be recorded.

Does that mean that I can drop classes right now?

Also, what’s the difference between drop and cancel?

Pre-enrollment and add/drop are the same thing, though incoming freshmen are sometimes automatically added to certain classes before arriving on campus.

You only have to wake up early for classes that are in high demand (i.e. general reqs) or if your particular course selection doesn’t allow for many different schedules.

swuster, are you saying that i have to re-enroll during add/drop period? is pre-enrollment only a freshman thing or something?.. i don’t understand the purpose of the add/drop period. how long does it last?

pre-enrollment and add/drop are not the same thing.

add/drop is for corrections to the schedule you made during pre-enrollment. Pre-enrollment is done at the end of the semester for the following semester (i.e. in winter to enroll for classes in the spring).

Add/drop happens during the first few weeks of courses, and allows you to add new classes or drop classes you are already in. In general, you won’t want to add a course past the first week of classes. Drop deadlines are available online. You can drop before a certain date and it won’t show on your transcript at all. You can also drop by a later date that will show on your transcript that you W (withdrew).
