I did some research about the biology prerequisite courses. Some schools said 1 year of biology while some schools said 1 year of “upper level” of biology, and some schools need genetics courses.
I’ve asked my advisor, she said that I just need to take intro to biology(molecular and cellular + evaluation) for 2 semesters, no need to take general biology + genetics courses.
I think she was wrong and I need to take general biology instead of intro to biology, I also think that that I need to take 1 semester of genetics. Am I correct?
Thanks for answering.
Also, should I take zoology?
You need to take a year-long biology course with its associated lab classes–the one that bio majors take-- to fulfill admission requirements for most medical schools.
Some medical schools require or strongly recommend additional biology coursework (typically genetics, anatomy, physiology). You don’t need to take those additional courses unless you plan on applying to those schools. And you can take those additional required classes at any time–even after you’ve already applied. (The requirement is have pre-reqs completed before matriculation, not application.)
Genetics is not a required by most medical schools (see above), but it’s a course that some people feel is helpful for taking the MCAT. YMMV.
You don’t need to take zoology. (Unless you want to.)
You do need to take a semester of biochemistry.
