So I got into letter of science programs and feel very dissapointed. I applied for computer engineering, and I have no idea how this program works even though i’ve looked everywhere. So if I wanted to transfer to comp e how does it work, like what do i even do in this program. Will I be behind my peers?

Do you have any other admissions which are affordable and where you are directly admitted to the major or can freely declare the major after passing the prerequisites?
Sorry about your disappointment. Were you hoping for CS in the CMNS College, or Clark School of Engineering?
Straight up CS is more difficult than ever before.
Engineering is also a Limited Enrollment Program.
You have a lot of threads but I don’t see a chance me so don’t know your stats. UMD is a tough admit.
That you got into UMD tells me there’s a lot of direct admit out there for COMPE - so you can find an assured school - which would take the pressure off.
Let us know if you need to find schools - best to set up a match me if this is the case.
Good luck.
My D’s Husband applied for Engineering and was admitted L&S. He Graduated on time with all the other Engineering students. To get into Engineering from L&S you have to take certain Gateway courses with a certain GPA. These are the EXACT same courses that the Engineering students take. Upon completion of these courses you fill out a form and you become an Engineering Major.
Details can be found here Frequently Asked Questions | A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland
In the past UMD stated at Admitted Student Days, that transfers into Engineering were Not competitive. There are students who get into Engineering and drop out for various reasons. Engineering is a tough discipline. Just being good in Math does not always equate to being good in Engineering. If you can, attend an Admitted Student day and ask questions.
Good Luck
but is internal transfer to engineering guranteed because I’ve heard transfer to cs is near impossible
UMD has a number of Limited Enrollment Programs. Of all those programs only 2 are identified as difficult for Internal Transfer - Computer Science and Business. Students must exceed the requirements to get admitted. For all the others, the transfer process works as described. In addition to my son-in-law, my D applied Undecided and thus was automatically placed in L&S. By the end of her first semester, she decided to apply for a LEP (not Engineering). She already had some AP credits and had taken a course in her first semester that completed the transfer requirements. She filled out the appropriate form and started her second semester in that LEP.
The LEP transfer process descriptions do not use the word “Guarantee”. They just lay out the required process. If you can attend an Admitted Student Open House, you can ask them directly. You should look at the specific requirements for the Engineering discipline you want. If you have taken any AP courses you may have already satisfied some of the transfer requirements. Google “UMD (name of enginering major) 4 year plan for details.
Good luck
