I have been talkiing to my guidance counsoler. I like and trust her, but I don’t know how correct she is when it comes to college admissions. I have a ACT that matches with NYU, Georgetown, and University of Wisconsin, my GPA is slightly below the average, but only by about .1 on a 4.0 scale. (Mostly due to one horrible year.) According to the recomendations that I have recieved on CC, as well as my own research, these would be matches or slight reaches. However, she seems hesitant to have me apply. Who should I believe?
Thanks!
If you have any desire to apply to a school, you should, but keep in mind that any school with a sub 20% acceptance rate is quite the reach for most people.
@wasserman782 - whether to apply or not is ultimately your decision (and your family). If your GC is experienced and is giving you advice based on facts (perhaps from your school’s previous acceptances etc), I would seriously consider those. Online forum advice may or may not be correct, because of the wide variety of posters. For example - I am a high school senior - whether to take my advice seriously or your GC’s - would be your choice.
@MedSciBud Lol… Very true. However, my GC is reccomending schools like UW Whitewater. Not that it is a bad school, but a 31 ACT is 6 points above their average, and my GPA is .3 above their average.
Whitewater is definitely a safety school.
I heard that GC’s can be biased - they want to get you into a college, but necessarily the best one. However, please note that I have no clue if this is true.
Listen to what she’s saying but take it with a grain of salt. Don’t let her discourage you from applying to highly selective schools. I think you have a chance at the schools you mentioned.
On another thread you posted your GPA as 3.57. Is that weighted or unweighted? If weighted then Georgetown is pretty much out of reach. If unweighted Gtown is still a high reach. NYU would be a reach too.
Apply to a reach or two but don’t get your hopes up. Marquette may be a match. UW Whitewater a safety.
