The congresswoman’s doctor is claiming to be ‘optimistic’ for her chances of recovery. However, it seems the bullet passed through her head so how able she will be will have to wait to be determined. She was apparently communicative on her way to the hospital.

I just watched Obama’s press conference, the 9 year old girl did die.

That’s all I can really think about, everyone needs to say some prayers today and tell your family what they mean to you tonight.

This is very tragic. This website has links farther down to his farewell youtube clips. He seems like he was suffering from mental illness. Maybe schizophrenia, given his age.

I watched the videos from youtube, wierd stuff.

My wife survived a lone-gunner shooting incident (I’ve referenced it once before) and the murder also posted youtube videos with similiar garbage, although not very political, just wacked-out philosophy.

At the same time, I keep reading stories that the police have arrested/are searching for a second and/or third gunman. I hope these turn out to be unfounded rumors, because one person involved in this is more than bad enough.

Maybe the guy was mentally ill. That certainly doesn’t preclude a political motive. I’m sure that many assassins throughout history have been mentally ill. It’s more than high time that politicians toned down the inflammatory, sometimes eliminationist rhetoric, and realized that there are too many people out there who are especially vulnerable to such rhetoric (because they’re mentally ill or for other reasons) and can easily be influenced to plan and commit terrible, violent acts.

^ This was the fault of the shooter and no one elses.

You seem eager to pin this on someone other than him.

I’m with you BIGeast, can’t stop thinking that there is some family who lost a young daughter today. Trying to turn it into a bigger political statement just seems really crass.

The shooter did not live in a vacuum. When one person draws a target on a human being and another person pulls the trigger, you damn well better bet there is most likely a connection and plenty of blame to go around.

Playing dumb about why someone who shoot a woman in the head, kill a child and kill many other human beings honors no one. This day should be about the truth as it is revealed instead of covering ones ears and refusing to hear the facts as they are know thus far.

As a member of a religious community that has been violently attacked, a board member of a non-profit that has suffered the same and now the member of a political party under attack, I’m getting damn tired of being told I’m being “political” when what I am saying is that I am scared and it’s not crazy to be so at this point in time.

I’m with DonnaL. The youtube rant appears to be a political statement by a mentally ill person.

Your confidence is not consistent with what is known at this time regarding his political inspirations.

I’m puzzled by your postings, danstearns. A politician who has been a target of vandalism and death threats, whose picture has been posted on another politician’s web site with a crosshairs, is attacked during one of her political events. But you say it’s crass for anyone to suggest that the violence might be linked to politics. Really? That’s a pretty weird comment, imho.

Rep. Gifford’s Republican opponent, Jesse Kelly, had a campaign rally with the following description: “Get on Target for Victory in November Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly.”

And now a loony decides to shoot Giffords. Coincidence? Or is Remove Gabrielle Giffords, shoot an M16 a little too suggestive?

This is sickening. 5 or 6 people dead, including a young child, and about a dozen injured? The congresswoman is expected to survive. I hope that she will make a good recovery.

I found the rhetoric at certain political rallies during the 2008 presidential campaign truly frightening, and I worried about Obama and his family. This woman, along with others, was targeted. Reload, indeed.

For God’s sake, the shooter listed The Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf among his favorite books. Does that mean he hated Ms. Giffords because she was too conservative? To infer that this guy saw Sarah Palin’s crosshairs on a political district , picked up a gun and started shooting is absurd. But in the words of Rahm Emmanuel, never let a crisis go to waste, eh?
Have a little respect for the innocent victims.

I see the same people who posted that the Fort Hood shooter being a Muslim had nothing to do with the shootings when the story first broke are now saying this tragic shooting had to be politically motivated…how typical

prayers to the families…

He refers to himself in the past tense on the you-tube account. Perhaps he didn’t expect to survive the day…

geeps, danstearns, et al: It was the shooter himself who politicized this, in a video posted last month:

“The majority of citizens in the united states of America have never read the united states of America’s constitution. You don’t have to accept the federalist laws,” the video’s titles say. “In conclusion, reading the second United States constitution, I can’t trust the current government because of the ratifications: the government is implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar. No! I won’t pay debt with a currency that’s not backed by gold and silver! No! I won’t trust in god!”

So it must be true!

Well,

Is Congresswoman Gifford’s father not having enough respect for the victims?

How does suggesting the shooter acted because of political beliefs show disrespect for the victims?!

I have no idea why this person acted as he did, but neither do I find it astounding or distasteful that people suspect that a political figure shot while appearing at a political function was the target of someone with political motives. Geez.
