Congresswoman Giffords

Eye witness account by a physician said she was conscious after she was shot. She seems to have responded to commands to move fingers ,etc. I know zilch about medicine but that sounds good to me.

I don’t know if any of you belong to USAA. On the back of the magazine they often portray a famous or interesting member. She was one of those profiled. She said she saw USAA membership as one of the unexpected benefits of her marriage.

Kudos to the two men who knocked him to the ground and got the gun away from him. That took real guts.

My heart goes out to the families of the staffer, the judge, the little girl and others who died.

College-aged deranged gunman - I keep thinking back to the horrors of Virginia Tech.

And as for shot in the head, I keep thinking back to James Brady. Left in a wheelchair with significant speech impairment.

It’s a sad, sad thing.

BigEastBeat, I read that the surgeon described it as going “through and through,” which certainly sounds like it went all the way through. I hope you’re right, though.

The young staffer who died is tearing my heart out. ldgirl spent the last 8 months working as a field operative for the CRNC. She was assigned to the Florida campaigns (Rubio, Scott and others) for Operation Red November and would often be on the ground working advance on events just like that.

I know this is not the appropriate place to put this…but can we request the title of this thread be modified?

I was hoping for the same thing, Idmom. It’s a little creepy to read it the way it is now.

[Moderator note: I changed it. Hope it is better this way. Let me know if you had another title in mind.]

I think they’ll get to it donna… I think the thread was started when the event was breaking and they had reported she had died. Just grateful it needs changing!

btw…here is an interesting tidbit I didn’t know. Gabby Giffords was one of the two Democratic votes for Civil Rights hero John Lewis as Speaker of the House. She is obviously a feisty one and hopefully this will serve her well in recovery.

(Much better title!)

Idmom, the Kos diary writer who was upset that Giffords voted against Nancy Pelosi and said she was “dead” to him a week or so ago (in a diary that got only 3 comments where many diaries get hundreds) apologized today, and said he deleted it himself:

In any event, I think that in the world we live in members of Congress do need more security. Hopefully that’s something we can all agree on.

As some of you know, my DD attends Scripps College… as did Congresswomen Giffords… we got a note from the Scripps President this afternoon which I think is worth adding to this thread:

Dear Scripps Parent,

By now, you may have heard the devastating news that U.S. Congresswoman (Arizona’s 8th District) Gabrielle Giffords '93 was shot in the head and seriously wounded, along with several others, this morning during a public appearance in Tucson, Arizona. I am relieved to report that, according to hospital reports at the time of this writing, she is expected to survive. Our thoughts and prayers are with her, her husband and family, and to all the other victims and their families affected by this national tragedy.

A warm and engaging presence, Gabrielle has remained a close friend of the College. In May 2009, she returned to campus to deliver the Commencement address. At that time, she told seniors: “The safety of the world depends on your saying ‘no’ to inhumane ideas. Standing up for one’s own integrity makes you no friends. It is costly. Yet defiance of the mob, in the service of that which is right, is one of the highest expressions of courage I know.”

As well as being an outstanding and courageous public servant, Gabrielle has been a superb mentor to young women. She was the first Scripps College alumna elected to national office and the first woman to represent Arizona in Congress in more than a decade. She is also Arizona’s first Jewish female representative, the youngest woman to be elected to the Arizona State Senate, and only the third woman in Arizona to be elected to the U.S. Congress. Scripps College is enormously proud to have her as an alumna.

Gabrielle studied Latin American history and sociology at Scripps. After graduation, she was a Fulbright Scholar in Chihuahua, Mexico, where she expanded her interests in international economic development. She later earned her master’s degree in regional planning from Cornell University.

Lori Bettison-Varga

From a Slate article several years ago:

[How did the gunman in Wisconsin manage to shoot himself in the head three times? - By Michelle Tsai - Slate Magazine](How did the gunman in Wisconsin manage to shoot himself in the head three times?)

So Congresswoman Giffords has already beaten the odds. May she continue to do so.

Maintaining this one thread in compliance with Terms of Service has required undue attention from the Moderator Team. At this time, we must close the thread.
