But young liberals—perhaps the most vocally dissatisfied political constituency in America today—are one of the least generous demographic groups out there. In 2004, self-described liberals younger than thirty belonged to one-third fewer organizations in their communities than young conservatives. In 2002, they were 12 percent less likely to give money to charities, and one-third less likely to give blood. Liberal young Americans in 2004 were also significantly less likely than the young conservatives to express a willingness to sacrifice for their loved ones: A lower percentage said they would prefer to suffer than let a loved one suffer, that they are not happy unless the loved one is happy, or that they would sacrifice their own wishes for those they love.

Abstract:
To what extent does the national religious context affect volunteering? Does a religious environment affect the relation between religiosity and volunteering? To answer these questions, this study specifies individual level, contextual level, and cross-level interaction hypotheses. The authors test the hypotheses by simultaneously studying the impact of religiosity of individuals, the national religious context, and their interplay on volunteering while controlling for possible confounding factors both at individual and contextual levels. Based on multilevel analyses on data from 53 countries, frequent churchgoers are more active in volunteer work and a devout national context has an additional positive effect. However, the difference between secular and religious people is substantially smaller in devout countries than in secular countries. Church attendance is hardly relevant for volunteering in devout countries. Furthermore, religious volunteering has a strong spillover effect, implying that religious citizens also volunteer more for secular organizations. This spillover effect is stronger for Catholics than for Protestants, non-Christians and nonreligious individuals.

It may have to do with conservatives being generally richer?

Especially since they’re limiting their studies to “liberals younger than 30.” Young people are known for being quite poor as well.

(btw, “beliefnet” is probably not a great site to be getting these sorts of stories from :p)

fizix is right. Conservatives tend to be higher class and young liberals tend to be poor college kids. Besides there is a difference between giving money and giving time. I think giving your time to charity is more important then simply giving money.

I really doubt conservatives under 30 are richer than liberals under 30. From my personal experience I’d think the opposite.

also, since the pool of young conservatives is smaller, the # of donations is going to be higher. common sense.

My statistics teacher would fail you for making the titular claim. But you’re not in his class, so I guess it doesn’t matter.

Here’s a possibility: young liberals may not lie as much. Not many people I know at all would rather suffer than let their loved ones suffer.
