<p>My son is a junior at a highly ranked academic private school. He was captain of basketball team junior year, one of eight senior class leaders selected to represent the school in his senior year, is a student “peer” advisor and was named captain of the math team for his senior year. Is in top 5% of his class, has a 4.0 unweighted GPA and a 4.25 wighted GPA. Will have completed 5 AP’s by end of junior year. Super scored a 1520/2210 (770 math, 750 reading and 690 writing) on the SAT after two attempts. Based upon recruiting calls there appears to be a good chance many of the coaches from D3 schools would support his application as a prospective member of the basketball team. Ivies showing limited interest as a basketball prospect. Plans to double major in business/economics and engineering. What are his realistic chances for admission at Harvard, Yale or MIT without basketball? How about MIT, Hopkins or little ivies if his application is supported by basketball staff? Last how about an out of state application for UVA?</p>
<p>SAT writing is not in the interquartile range for HYM so he may get scrutiny. since he’s not playing bball at HYM, he’ll be a competitive applicant if his ec’s are good enough. </p>
<p>I think he should be able to get into UVA, it’s not that hard.</p>
<p>What is his ethnicity? That will be a key factor in this situation. </p>
<p>If he is an ORM or White, Harvard, Yale, and MIT without basketball are high reaches (unlikely). </p>
<p>He does have a good shot at MIT with basketball (I have had several friends who have been “recruited” to MIT for playing a sport.). Hopkins is probably a match unless he is applying for bioengineering. Then, it is a reach.</p>
<p>UVA is probably a low match for him.</p>
<p>He has decent extra curricular activities but nothing truly stands out from the regular applicant crowd. Since he is still a junior, he should look into bolstering his extra curricular activities.</p>
