Considering Transferring to GWUSB as a Finance Major - Need help deciding!

Career goal is Investment Banking–GWU isn’t a target school, but neither is current school. If you could help with any of these questions, I’d appreciate it.

Why did you (or your child) choose GWUSB?

If you’ve graduated, did you get the first job you hoped for?

What size are most of your business classes (sophomore and up)?

Are professors personable and the type that know your name (a lot of the Rate My Prof reviews are old and not good)?

Do professors grade fairly and is the workload manageable?

Is the atmosphere collaborative or competitive?

How helpful has the career center been?

Have you found alumni willing to help you with an internship or get your resume to the hiring team? (I don’t have family with Wall Street connections, but many peers at my current school do. They already know what jobs they can get.)

Are you able to sign up for the classes you need/want or do they fill up pretty fast?

The school advertises access to lots of opportunities in DC (IMF, World Bank, etc). Have you found that to be true?

I can’t answer specific questions about culture in the school of business.

I would encourage you to understand what credits will transfer especially if you aren’t coming from a business school currently. GWU’s gen eds and business core are not insignificant, and may require at least an extra semester, depending. Something to work thru timing and budget wise, as appropriate.

I will say in general no school, even the target schools, will help you get internships/jobs…it is on the student to network and make things happen.

Do you have any other transfer options?

Calling @catcherinthetoast for IB insights.

OP: At which school are you currently enrolled ?

Have you declared a major at your current school ?

Coming from another business school, and all courses have been accepted by GWU for transfer.

Not considering other schools for transfer, only to reapply next year if don’t transfer this year.

What do you find lacking about your current business school?

Current business school is great in every way, except it’s in a small town, far from city life, and very non-diverse. I wasn’t sure it would bother me as much, but after a year, I feel suffocated there.

Then, if GWU is affordable, it sounds like it meets your preferences.
You’ll have to hustle to catch up and get externships or internships since you’ll be a bit behind in terms of “lay of the land”, using the career center… compared to those who started as freshmen but other than that GWU wouldn’t hold you back.

Which, based on prior posts in another thread, was the primary concern before you entered your current school.

I would not consider GW conducive to your career goals. I can be more specific but it extends beyond not being a target.

If committed to transferring, and an IB career, I would seek out schools that better support your desired outcome.

Good luck.

So, @div_0305 's choices would be either to stay at a university where they’re unhappy and unlikely to get to the career they’re thinking of, or potential for a better fit but even more unlikely to get to that career.

As an aside, I don’t understand CollegeConfidential kids’ fascination with a field they can’t possibly know well enough to make it their sole criterion for a college choice. There are so many high pay/fast paced fields or business positions which OP may never have heard of.

OP sounds unhappy at their current university- I wouldn’t stay just for the hope of that one career path. Life is too short and spending half of one’s college years at a place that’s a poor fit/was chosen due to rank (?) doesn’t seem right - there are plenty of careers available from GWU (which sounds like the one transfer OP’s considering - @div_0305 do you have other acceptances?)

Totally agree with this point and would add IB has a wash out rate well over 50%. Even though my own kids grew up with a familiarity with the profession, I actively dissuaded them from considering it as a career path when looking at schools.

I would suggest you work backwards by choosing an area of academic interest and curiosity to focus on and then consider college fit juxtaposed against what you don’t like or enjoy at your current school.

I apologize for straying from your specific questions but thought it worth addressing.

No, I’m only considering GWU for transfer. The ratemyprof reviews are really bad and dated compared to my current school. Transferring would not be good if the professors and quality of instruction are not similar to my current school. Hoping someone who has gone there can reply and give me some feedback.

Have you tried networking to get introduced to a current student? Have you asked the transfer admissions staff to connect you with a student?

Why is that please?

The other schools I was accepted to are not appealing. I applied to them as safeties.

I haven’t, but I plan to.
