I FINALLY GOT MY AMSCO AP US HISTORY BOOK!!!
Wooooooooooot!!!

I waited 6 days for it and it arrived as scheduled. Now I can get ahead of everyone even before school starts! :D

Thanks for the recommendations guys! :)

I’m glad you’re happy that you got the Amsco book (We’re talking about Review Text in American History by Irving L. Gordon, right?). Just some tips about it: It’s really great for political history; not too great on social. So it is a very handy REVIEW text in a user-friendly outline format, but make sure you use it as a SUPPLEMENT for your actual textbook. And remember: for AP US you only need to know a general history of the United States. But read the textbook! Good luck in your studies.

mj93, the best APES book for you is the one that serves YOU best. Some people will prefer SmartyPants, and others will prefer REA and PR. Read the customer reviews on Amazon. Only one person reviewed the REA book and said it was not good for self-study. SmartyPants reviewers said that it’s good to supplement a textbook but not good alone for self-study. One Princeton Review reviewer said that there are only about 70 pages of review in a 304-page book! Kind of hard for me to believe, but it seems like Princeton Review is OK. From these reviews it seems like SmartyPants is best, but keep in mind that it’s only great as a supplement with class notes and a textbook. You can take a look at a sample chapter on this website: http://www.lulu.com/browse/preview.php?fCID=154552
Based on the preview, it seems like the book really is good as a supplement but not enough alone for the exam.
If you buy REA and Princeton Review now on Amazon, you’ll only have to spend like $12.00 for the used copies.
Okay, so it seems like none of the texts does a good job alone.
According to the AP website, Environmental Science: Earth as a Living Planet by Daniel B. Botkin and Edward A. Keller meets the curricular requirements of AP Environmental Science. You might want to get that instead. Go to Amazon and search “environmental science botkin.” There are 76 used & new copies available from $9.70, and some old copies available for 62 cents!

Why don’t you purchase a copy of that textbook and get Princeton Review (SmartyPants costs 20 bucks, more than the other study guides) and see how things go? For $16.00 or less you can get a good textbook AND a good study guide. That’s what I would do if I were you.

“(We’re talking about Review Text in American History by Irving L. Gordon, right?).”

No, it’s “United States History Preparing For The Advanced Placement Examination by John J. Newman and John M. Schmalbach (Revised)”

It has a big American flag on it

Thanks, Dchow! That’s what I’ll do.

funployee: Whoa, I was totally on the wrong track! Well, Review Text in American History is also a great book, very useful for political history and general trends for the test.

mj93: I’m glad you found my help useful. That’s very satisfying.

are APs harder or easier than SAT II subject tests?

For computer science, which is better? Barron’s or PR?

Get 5 steps to a 5, its the best for CS.

coolg, what would you say are some ways in which 5 steps to a 5 would be better than PR, Barron’s, or Litvin’s book?

AP Stats- Barron’s

AP World History- Princeton Review

are those the prep books you guys suggest for these courses

One question - PR, Barrons, or both for Physics B?

I’d say princeton review is good for AP US History besides AMSCO and REA.

What would be the best books for:

AP US History? (teacher is using the AMSCO book as sort of an extra textbook, along with America’s History (Bedford/St.Martin’s))

AP Language and Composition? (I’m not sure about the correct name for this class, my schedules lists it as English III AP. It’s the one you should take in junior year.)

AP Physics B? (I need the best ones for this, since I’ve never taken any form of physics before.)

I have a question -

on the calc BC exam, if i already got a 5 on AB, then on the free response could i focus solely on the BC questions, because theres no point of putting time into the 3 AB questions - i am not interested in a 5 subscore if i already have one.

does the BC score include points received from answering AB FR questions?

and are there AB questions in the multiple choice?

AP US History : I used both REA and AMSCO. Got a 5. Studied these books two weeks in advance. My teacher was crap. It helps a lot. Just make sure you practice those DBQ’s and FRQ’s…

what would be the best prep book(s) for AP world history?
