How good does your credit need to be to consolidate your loans?

Bad news…student loan consolidation ceased to be viable six months ago. My wife is a financial aid advisor for college students and this has been a severe problem for her students this year. If you have Great Lakes as your loan servicer, they have consolidation/repayment plans that don’t factor in credit scores but you won’t have any luck trying to consolidate your loans with a third party. On the plus side, Bernanke suggests that the recession will be over by the end of this year and recessions rarely last more than 18 months anyway, so the whole situation might be better shortly. Speak to the company that services your loans for specific information.
