Constitutional Law for public service abroad

I am interested in studying law, in particular constitutional law with the aim of entering public service/politics in my home country of kenya. I do not intend to do so just because it appears as though every other politician is a lawyer but rather because the defining challenge of my generation is the on going struggle for a new constitution.

My question: is studying the US constitution beneficial to understanding a non-US constitution? Is there some generic knowledge/skill that I can expect to acquire from a US law school that would help me better understand a constitutional method modeled after the British one?
