My husband, after a bout of skin cancer, is having difficulty finding a sunscreen that doesn’t irritate his eyes while wearing his contacts. It’s not really a problem of the sunscreen running into his eyes from sweating, because it happens even when he’s not sweating. Could it be fumes from the sunscreen?

I’ve bought several varieties that are sweatproof, made for the face, made for babies, etc., but he continues to have problems. The optometrist and the dermatologist haven’t had any answers. So far the least irritating is Lubriderm with sunscreen, but it’s only 15 SPF and there are times he needs a higher number.

Any advice (other than staying inside or not wearing contacts)?

my eyes/contacts often get irritated with sunscreen, but usually only when swimming/sweating. i’ve found the skinceuticals line to be amazing though. your derm might have samples or you could check with a nearby spa.

Have you tried Neutrogena Sensitive Skin?
I can’t take the smell/fumes of most sunscreens, and generally it irritates my eyes as soon as I put it on (I don’t have contacts, they’re just really sensitive), but I can use this one. It’s sold at most supermarkets and is around $8 a bottle.

Try Olay products. I believe they make a SPF 30 facial moisturizer (even in a sensitive skin formula, if you prefer). I’ve been happy with other Olay products I’ve used, so you may want to give them a try.

My daughter plays a sport, has sensitive skin and wears contacts…she has found an expensive - figures product called Minesol by ROC, spf 40 - uva -uvb …it is made in France by a division of Johnson & Johnson and we buy it in Canada. It is mostly Titanium & Zinc so it gives a slight ghostly pallor…but works well. Good Luck!
