Contemplating a transfer..

I am a native of the Chicago suburbs, near Evanston where Northwestern is located. My father graduated from Northwestern and my grandmother worked doing scientific research there. I opted to attend a school in California, partially for the warmer climate, and am now a freshman at one of the highest ranked California State universities. However, recently I have begun to think about transferring back to the Chicago area. My top choice school would be Northwestern, but for various reasons, I would not be able to transfer until after my sophomore year. I read on the Northwestern website that priority is given to students transferring in after one year of college, but if I kept my GPA at 3.8 or above and did some extracurriculars what would be my chances of being accepted for Journalism, English, or some other liberal arts type major? Also, since I read that journalism credit does not transfer, would I have to retake all my journalism courses?
