Contest for the best Introduction

Submit your introduction to the following prompt:

Is there any value in studying literature of the past or should we focus only contemporary literature that deals with subjects we can relate to?

It was a dark and stormy night.

Great first sentence but it’s actually plagiarism. It is the opening line in two novels: “Paul Clifford” and “A Wrinkle in Time” - not to mention one of Snoopy’s favorite lines…

^
Clearly, then, it was meant to be plagiarized.

Here’s a semi-serious one. My English teacher always liked to discuss this topic. (Remember to pronounce “paged” with two syllables in your head.)

The eleventh-grade English class has just been assigned The Scarlet Letter, and every inquiring mind wants to know the same thing. What relevance, each wonders, does this ancient yellow-paged slice of hell have to my life as a sixteen-year-old kid shoveling Chicken McNuggets into a cardboard box and praying no one asks me to sweep the lettuce off the floor? The answer, of course, is that it has none—and this does not matter.

Once upon a time

Halcyonheather,

“Clearly, then, it was meant to be plagiarized” …Indeed, but your intention (flippancy) was not very original so i thought i would get back at you…LOL!

Now, onto your more earnest submission: I LOVE IT!!! It is a fantastic HOOK! Why stop there? This contest is about the SAT Essay, right? So submit a full introduction as you would on the real test.

TO ALL OF YOU:

Let me be clear to all of you who want to learn something. This thread is about the importance of a full SAT-type, persuasive essay, INTRODUCTION. The longer the better. And if you are wondering what it comprises, i’ll say it once and only once:

hook (opening sentence),
position,
justification,
relevance,
closing sentence.

You cannot accomplish all of this, effectively, in less than 100 words.

Students: If you want a good Essay score then contribute to this thread, follow it, read the critiques.

Teachers: we welcome your PROFESSIONAL comments. Please feel free to chime in. I do not own this thread; on the contrary, i want it to be a real learning experience for kids who do not have the money to pay for tutors or to be in a private school.

Let’s do it!
