Controversial EC??

Let’s say hypothetically that somebody has a youtube channel with over 10k subscribers talking about secularism and philosophy. There are controversial topics; however, said person would approach them with facts and common decency/morals. Examples of the controversial topics would include Camus’ ultimate question (should we commit suicide?) and religious indoctrination at birth.

Is it worth including this channel as an EC if said person was to market it correctly?

(i put quite a bit of time into it.)

Yes, include it as an EC. It’s something you’ve devoted a lot of time to. Making it the topic of your PS might be a different story, but it should be fine as an EC. 10k subs isn’t easy to get

@mohammadmohd18 I really did put a lot of work into it, but I can also see an adcom not take the channel in its whole, and take a video criticizing religious indoctrination at birth as me being racist and hating religions when I just want everybody to be together.

@FiftyTwo52 I’m not a particularly religious person but it a coming across to me as a little naive but you’re young so that is not unexpected. You might rub an ad com the wrong way. Strong opinions targeting other people’s belief systems does not “bring people together.” Having said that, I think you should be authentic. Be the real you and let the cards fall as they may.

I think it would be fine to include. A lot of philosophers study hard moral and/or controversial questions, so that’s a bit to be expected from a philosphy channel. As long as it’s done respectfully, that’s really all that matters.

“criticizing religious indoctrination at birth” Well that might be a little caustic haha. Pray they don’t actually watch that video. But again, fine to include, as long as you haven’t been overly strident on the YT channel.

I would definitely include it. Your videos reflect who you are and how you think. If your views aren’t welcome at a college, you probably don’t want to be accepted there anyway. If your videos are flagged as being a problem by the admissions office, that is probably a sign that the institution doesn’t hold free speech in as high a regard as they should, considering that based on what you have described your videos aren’t really politically controversial or mean-spirited… even the religious indoctrination video wouldn’t strike me personally as offensive at all and it would be hard for me to imagine an admissions officer being terribly opposed to you giving your opinion about it unless maybe you’re applying to a religious school, which I doubt you are.

Like another poster said, 10k subscribers is an impressive achievement, it would be a shame for colleges to miss out on seeing how much time and effort you have devoted to what you are interested in.

Do you discuss atheistic indoctrination from birth? Do you give fair critique to both sides?

A blog or youtube channel isn’t a tip. If you can form a savvy/well done presentation in your app/supps, maybe you link it. But that means some sort of substance. That often means not the distraction of media venues but some real intellectual engagement. It means knowing what matters to college adcoms.

And it’s not hypothetical, right?
