Hi all, I wonder what the general consensus is on controversy in college essays. I’m just about ready to submit my EA app, but I showed my counselor and he warned me that a certain long supplement seemed to be a little too “shocking”. It’s not I’m-a-psycho-killer kind of controversy, nor is it offensive. To be brief, it’s about how my favorite TV show is Dexter, which is told from the point of view of a serial killer. I focused on how that lens was able to show me the humanity even in what seemed despicable at first, opening my eyes to the diversity of human experience. Which ultimately led to my reconciling another conflict in my life (related to the GSA- I’m bi and never agreed with their loud activism, so we were at odds for a while). It’s about empathy and seeing through others’ eyes.

What do you guys think? Too “controversial”?
