So conventional wisdom says that you don’t write an application essay on an event from your elementary school years. But what about a person? I’m using the “person whose influenced you” essay for my long essay but the person I’ve chosen died while I was in the 6th grade. His influence, however, is still, uh, influencing (for lack of a better term). What I mean to say is that my last paragraph is about the way he changed me effects what I’m doing today. So what does conventional wisdom think about this?

Nobody said you couldn’t write about something that happened way back when. The POINT of the app essays is to demonstrate something about yourself. As long as that point is accomplished, you can write about whatever you please.

That being said, go ahead with your topic. But let me warn you, as I do many people, that you REALLY have to talk about YOURSELF. So I get a little nervous when it seems like only your last paragraph is about you. Make it mostly about you.
