Converting old videos

If you have used a service to convert old 8mm or VHS tapes, etc to digital or DVD’s, can you please recommend how to proceed? Is this something I have to do locally i.e. sit down with them and go through the tapes? Or just send them off somewhere and have it all done without editing?

We have done 8mmm to DVD - dropped them off at Costco and that was it! It’s been several years ago though. No editing. Honestly that would drive me nuts and keep me from ever doing it.

My kids gave my H a gift certificate for Legacy Box. He sent off 20 old beta and VHS tapes and got back unedited digital versions on CD and thumb drive. It was a quick and easy, but now he needs to edit them! At least the CDs take up far less room than the tapes.

My husband used Legacy Box and he said there were pretty good. It was $250 for 20 VCR tapes. (He says that was half price).

Thirty-five years ago, I had my mom’s old 8mm converted to VHS–for about $25. I remember putting the reels in date order and numbering the boxes. I got a few out of place because I didn’t know what they were. Funny thing, the tape didn’t seem to run as long as it took us to watch them on the 8mm projector back in the day. It took a long time to thread each reel and rewind it!
