Converting/Recalculating GPA

So I know a lot of people are in a similar situation as far as GPAs go. My school bases our GPA on a 5 point scale. That being said, my UW is a 4.64 and my W is a 5.25.

I know other schools base it out of 4.3, 4.5, etc. So my main question is how can one calculate their GPA out of a 4 point scale?

I think for my situation, I would just subtract 1, because that way the scale would just eliminate credit for Fs (which are given 1 point of credit at my school- stupid, I know). That would make my UW 3.64 and W 4.25

But I tried setting it up as a proportion and cross multiplied and found that that way my UW would be a 3.71. I don’t think this is accurate, but does anyone else have any info??

I think the way to do it is proportionally. Just subtracting 1 doesn’t make sense; think of your gpa as a percentage. In your case 4.64/5 would be 92.8, so your gpa out on a 4 point scale should be equivalent to the same percentage, I would think. Also, my school gave 1.0 credit for F’s also, even though it was on a 4 point scale.

This is for Texas Southern, but the calculator isn’t for any specific way they do it, just 5.0 to 4.0 scale.

Yours would be a 3.69 UW and a 4.2 W.
