It’s pretty simple to list the reasons as to why one should attend Brown over another school - the academic requirements (or lack thereof), the type of student body, ivy-leage education, etc… but I think it might be useful to others as well as myself if people listed reasons why someone shouldn’t go to Brown.

Just as a frame of reference, I’m choosing between Brown and Duke and plan on majoring in the sciences/science related areas. I visited both, and wasn’t immediately hooked at either institution.

Just to reiterate, I don’t want this to be a Brown vs. [blah] thread, but rather a “why not Brown” thread.

Hey, those were/are two of my top choices/tormentors as well. These are the possible disadvantages I saw in Brown, although i am matricualting there:
-ultra-liberal, even a bit one dimensionally so, depending who you hang with. I am liberal, but still, a dialogue is imporant…during adoch i tried to argue with some peeps that larry summers’ “chauvinist” statements had some validity, and it went over like, well, a really heavy lead balloon
-distribution requirements (like at Duke) ensure that you will be educated in many areas other than your major, wheras at Brown this is totally up to you(with an advisor). A common querie is: Would a Brown alum stand up to a Columbia or Chicago alum in a debate about politics or art?
-And oh yeah, that FOCUS program at Duke sounds amazing if one of the disciplines piques your interests…oh whoops im getting all x versus x on ya…ok im done

its cold
its very cold
rhode island is nicknamed the ocean state but the beach is an hour away. how ironic
and its cold
plus its the name of a color
and it was funded by slave trade money
and its called brown (how ironic is that)

oh yah, and ive gotten from a number of people: “Oh, isn’t that the hippie ivy?”, or worse, “Isn’t that the pot smoking ivy?”
Although, I would like to assume that grad schools and future employers know better…

If you want the Greek life or the Cameron Crazy experience, Brown is not for you. The food at Duke is probably better. I also will say I’ve heard nice things about the FOCUS program. Duke has much nicer weather and it has a far more southern culture – 14% of the class is from NC and 20%+ are from the surronding states if I recall correctly.

Duke has much better weather, consistently.

Duke has a lot more school spirit around athletics.

At Duke incoming students get a free Ipod!

If you are a girl, I am willing to bet that the guys at Duke are better looking on average than the boys at Brown.

Brown has very little school spirit
many people get very lazy once there there due to pass/fail options and no requirements
the dorms are all really ****ty
providence is a real city (for some this is bad, i dont know your preferences)
girls are most likely hotter at duke (never been, but southern schools def have hotter girls)

and of course the best reason not to go:
I’m on the waitlist

hmm… Duke sounds like a good name. i meanid rather say i graduated from Duke (a noun) than from Brown (an adjective)
im sure ifi said i went to brown, the other people will prolly be listen for the other words, unitl the realize its just BROWN. but ifi said i went to Duke, they think “oh wow, Royalty”
plus, im sure the chicken is better at duke.
and the iced tea is different. do u like sweet tea or regular tea? but the tea is better in the south. hey man, go to duke

Many of your thoughts are pretty superficial arguments…imho. I hate to be picky about this stuff, and i don’t want to sound like a cocky ■■■■■■■, but I’m looking for like…genuine reasons and not the variety of iced tea served.

im trying to bring a bit of humor into this. i have a personality, ya know? and im not uptight like u might be. plus, i love iced tea and coke products. i effectively ruled out two top colleges because they didnt have coke. they served PEP…(starts to go into convulsions). so lighten up man…or woman

iced tea is good, and it should be Green Tea, perferably Arizona. or Sweet tea, agian arizona. umm… not an iced tea thread huh
ok… i geuss they way i did my collegesearch, the tours i took after being accepted were just to weed out based on little small trivial things. what kind of crap didnt u like? too manypigeons on the campus? the grass wasnt green enough? i dont know, my mind is weird.
