Convocation 2008

Just returned from my D’s graduation.

For those that have not had the experience with U. Chicago, they do a pretty good job.

The fun started with a PBK reception and induction Thursday evening at Ida Noyes. I noted with curiosity that the academic elite of the class were pretty normal appearing folks, not fitting the nerd reputation of UofC at all.

Friday had a ceremony in Rockefeller Memorial Chapel in the afternoon where the faculty member above gave a great speech called the "Remains of Education’ which was the reprise of the opening speech made the start of freshman year four years before. And there were some great student reminisces. the best was a student that recalled that the first time she called the “drunk bus”, she was inside the drunk bus…

Friday evening was a dessert reception in the Museum of Science and Industry, with free access to the sub and coal mine!

Saturday morning we had perfect weather for commencement (which is good because they read each of 1000 names of graduating seniors…). The bagpipe procession leading the students in an out was a sight not to be missed, as well as the procession of faculty in their robes. And Jose Quintan’s bright yellow robe was the best of all, IMHO.

After the students marched out, they each headed to a tent for their academic unit (BSD for my D, for example) where they connected with family.

Sunday we picked up a rental truck and packed the kid…

It was a great weekend. We had rain, but only at times where it did not matter!

So you first second and third years, this is what the future holds for you…

Congratulations to you and your D! Thanks for posting the description of graduation days.
