Cool Museums

Okay, I’m planning a roadtrip, and will have an extra afternoon in Chicago not looking at nearby colleges. I’ve never been to Chicago, but have heard about many of the amazing museums. I was wondering what some of the better ones are.
I am into art (and if there is a photography specific one, that’d be amazing, but I won’t hold my breath), though I also like science-y museums.

Thanks!

That’s easy. You need to go to the Art Institute of Chicago or the Museum of Science and Industry (hardly a mile from campus). The Field Museum of Natural History is also world-class, but if you have just one afternoon, you won’t be able to do more than one.

The Art Institute is definitely a tour de force, but you really can’t miss Sue at the Field Museum. Check their websites for special exhibits they may have a this time.

The Art Institute is behind only the Met and MOMA as a great American museum, and it is truly world-class. If you have one afternoon, you should spend it there, and not try to do more. Chicago has a ton of museums of every shape and size, but it would be crazy to pass up the Art Institute for any of them.

I would also make the walk up Michigan Ave to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA).

Chicago Ave. (800 North) west of Michigan and in the streets a little south have a lot of art stores and art galleries, including a two-story store called Paper Source. drools

Also, Pilsen, on the South Side, is a great art community, and it’s probably what SoHo in New York was like 40 or 50 years ago, in that the surrounding neighborhoods can be a little tough, but the artists galleries/residences are stunning beyond compare. The galleries cluster on Halsted Ave, south of 18th st.

hey, thanks for help. I’m really looking forward to this trip. :D

Okay, I’ve found some extra time in the trip, and so I’ve rearranged some things so now I have an afternoon and morning in Chicago (middle of the week). So i’m going to go to the Art Institute of Chi walk down around Pilsen. Then, I’m really into photography, as was wondering if anybody knew of some places that were really pretty in the morning that would be fun to photograph.

again, thanks!

Like, everywhere. Seriously, start flickr hunting for Chicago city and Chicago university pics.

Pretty in the morning? All over.

From Art Institute to Pilsen may be farther than you want to walk. Look at the CTA maps.

I think there is a museum of holography…where is it…maybe at the
Columbia campus.

I don’t know where the OP is coming from, but one thing about Chicago compared to everywhere else I’ve lived is that the blocks are reaaaalllllly long, and the streets themselves are reaaaalllly wide. Ten blocks from my office to somewhere would be about half a mile, a 7-8 minute walk. Ten blocks from point A to point B in Chicago is probably 1-1/2-2 miles.

I agree that the Art Institute is a must; still, since it is photography you are looking for, you should make time for the Museum of Contemporary Photography here: [Museum of Contemporary Photography](http://www.mocp.org/). Free, by the way.
