Cooper Union for Graphic Design

<p>now that 6900 views, back to boring numbers.
no, keep going art talk, everybody now!</p>

<p>new fact sheet, academic year 2009-2010 (end result)

  • 7 percent admission rate (was 9)
-approximately 1,000 full-time undergraduate students: 50 percent in engineering; 35 percent in art; 15percent is architecture (same)
  • 90 students in the Maurice Kanbar Graduate Institute working toward the Master of Engineering degree and Master of Architecture (was 50 in eng, no arch)
  • 65 percent male, 35 percent female (was 64/36)
  • 41 percent African -American, Asian-American, Latino, American Indian; 42 percent Caucasian; 15 percent foreign nationals (was 40, 45, 13… what are rest 2%? biracial? can’t be)
  • 58 percent from New York City and state; 42 percent from 43 other states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. virgin Islands (was 60, 40, 40)
  • 8.5 to 1 student-faculty ratio (was 7.5, more sabbatical or lay-off money crunch?)</p>

<p>Enjoyed to read all the comments from panlsky, switters, Drae, and bears …
It is hard for me to appreciate the winning’s art. I am still in the stage like: What is that? I can be better …
I need to read more to educate myself…</p>

<p>hit 7000 views!
time to nitpick!!!</p>

<p>2010-2011 COA or budget
commuter $7,245 (was7,195) which should include student fee $1,500 per year (was 1,450)
Dormitory resident $ 19,425 (was 1,9375)
Off Campus resident $ 20,325 (was19,575)
you should add health service & insurance fee $ 1,466 (same)if you do not have insurance.</p>

<p>if international </p>

<p>Fees $3,500 (was 3,400)
R&B $14,150 (was 13,900)
Other(below) $4,075 (same)
books and supplies $ 1,800
transportation $700 (hey, subway went up!!)
personal expense $ 1,575 </p>

<p>International total budget $ 21,725 (was 21,375)</p>

<p>interestingly, they now says clearly in the facility listing under “student residence”
-Housing fees for the 2010-2011 academic year are $5,400 per student per single room per semester and $ 4,850 per student per double room per semester.</p>

<p>??? so times two (per year) housing should be
single $10,800
double $ 9,700
so what are they paying extra 2K (4K for international) within R&B? loveblue, switters, have you gotten any break down info?
the housing fee was AGAIN stated under “Fees and Expenses” new, this year. people must be asking this question often.</p>

<p>What else?</p>

<p>one scary thought.
Academic Standards and Regulations
“Readmission”
-Students who have been dismissed or who have withdrawn from the school and wish to be considered for readmission must reapply through the normal admissions procedures.
Such applicants may be asked to appear for an interview with a representative of the Admissions Committee as part of the process.</p>

<p>^this is NEW. 2009-2010 stated you’d only have to talk to committees and prove that you are sorry and want to be in again, no mention of reapplying thru hometest and whatnot.
This means it is harder to get back in once you are kicked out from underperforming or doing something bad. It might be the end of era… Work hard, kids!!</p>

<p>faculties, classes offered up and down - coming soon!</p>

<p>Happy 7100
nitpicking part 2</p>

<p>Prof. Mike Essl, whom loveblue posted about in old Cooper thread, is promoted from adjunct to associate prof.
He is like, super prof.
foundation 2D, 200th graphic design (2 classes) 300th intro, visual, interactive (3 classes)
this also prove that, hi mighty profs are willing to teach foundations. like the Dean Ms Day said at the openhouse.
Even topdog, Dennis Adams do foundation 3D. I don’t know who and how they split kids in groups, but I am sure they consider each kids’ hometest/brain/habitual trait, like, baseball draft, maybe? some prof can’t stand ARod or Hollowey but I am sure some who like to have them around. (OK, I am just guessing)</p>

<p>there are few other promotion from instructors to adjuncts, technicians to supervisors.
People tend to stick around, 80-85% are same folks doing same stuff.</p>

<p>Classes are basically same, just jiggled around.
Performance was in part of sculpture, now it’s own category and added 200th elementary class.
200th Sound Art by itself is new, it was part of video/film, which shows bit on bumping along with other digi related stuff.
200th science elective, Botany is ditched.
400 Junior seminar sounded fun is replaced (?) by
349 Senior Presentation Project, sounds like more of expecting “result” kind, which scares me a bit doubled with their change of the readmission policy.
310 Legal issues for Artist is also gone. Maybe coming back next year or so every kids would get chance to take it in duration of 4 years.</p>

<p>All these are just a pie in the sky if my kid nor myself ever gonna be able to attend Cooper
boo hoo woo make it pecan with whipped cream at least.
hey, what’s your fav. holiday pies? any special recipe?
I should get some lunch. have a nice day!!</p>

<p>someone just corrected me. it spells
“Halladay” (pitcher)
now how do I supposed to know that?</p>

<p>Maybe R&B for international covered food? I paid 4,850 for fall semester for her room</p>

<p>neat!
so Cooper didn’t raise housing fee at all.
I guess you are right, they guesstimated how much to feed kids.
suppose international food’d cost more? like, they won’t eat 2bro’s $1 pizza or McD dollar deal.
but then there is $1 samosa and $2.50 farafel. hummmmm getting hungry again.
what’s for dinner loveblue?
why oh why I got yet pile of work undone…
I know!! because I am lurking here CC and my hands aren’t moving much.</p>

<p>7200!!
I looked through and can not find the magazine with the article on the upside down sculpture.
from all I could guess,
taken to school (hinterland)
rent to some friend (point of no return)
fell behind the shelf (will find it when we move)
after all it’s my kid’s, not mine. he is free to do anything with it and of course never would have remember what he have done with it.
“…what? 2009? when is that?”</p>

<p>instead, here is from today’s e-newsletter.
Tasha Tudor (1915-2008) was this grandma illustrator/author. I don’t know exactly why but she lived in recreated olden time setting with pet corgis (!!!) and chickens in the farm house in VT.
Her will says to leave everything to older son who lived next door and helped her the most, but now other sibs are saying the brother made mom’s will change from the first one, which, second son would get half of the estate. Daughters are neglected in either way but angry at the brother nonetheless.
What sad is that, Tasha illustrated using all her kids as models, in old NE scenery, holidays, rituals, living the life of the good past.
In some video I saw about her, she was roasting a bird in the antique covered tin in the wood burning fireplace. When she were to baste it, her stick of butter was in the perfect shape of supermarkets’ log.
I figured she can not completely live in the world of nostalgia, or is it just careless styling job? After all she welcomed film crews in her home, let them rig all lights and sound equipments.</p>

<p>When I opened the link below, not yet knowing her passing of two years ago, I thought
" gosh! finally she gave up her anachro dress!!"
then I read it is a photo of her older son, who have been contested. The young boy she drew and painted is now old man himself (of course)
one day, my son will be this old. He will be white haired, wrinkled , shriveled. If I live to see that, we will be two old folks looking alike old together. yikes!
Let’s live a good life, have fun. It’s OK if I don’t have any “estate” left at all.
As the article tells here, admirers of her works worldwide will find out more “real life” dirt behind her idyllic life -is it a right words? sure was a great marketing at some point to live the same way she drew so dearly and loved by many- when the trial comes to end.</p>

<p>happy 7300 views</p>

<p>It should, would, could be a huge concern for them nice logical non-art parents “what will become of my kid after this? (cooper)”
one thing they can do is teach.
Here is rough tally of where Cooper faculty 2010-2011 came from</p>

<p>Cooper BFA
prof 0
associate prof 2
adjunct prof 3
instructor 11
visiting artist 3 </p>

<p>Yale, Columbia or UCLA MFA
prof 2
associate prof 1
adjunct prof 1
instructor 4
visiting artist 1</p>

<p>Whitney thing
prof 0
associate prof 1
adjunct prof 0
instructors 1
visiting artist 2</p>

<p>other strong-s
crankbrook MFA
prof 1
associate prof 1
adjunct 0
instructors 1
visiting artist 1</p>

<p>surprises (all faculties BA, BFA, MFA, mystery (studio school) all mixed)
new york studio school 2
MIT 2
CUNYs 5 (MFA Hunter 2 Queens 1)</p>

<p>foreigners or foreign degree including Japanese relief dude 5 </p>

<p>all others are all over, RISD, MICA, SAIC, SMFA, MYU, Cornell, Vassar Bard Bowdoin to Masart, Kuztown B(F)A to Tyler, U Rochester, NYU, states - OH,IL, AR, VCU, Rutgers M(F)A</p>

<p>What do I see?

  1. it seems easer to become instructor with Cooper BFA but hard to get ahead beyond that without MFA and/or Whitney
  2. It really doesn’t matter where and which you do BA or BFA</p>

<p>What I don’t see?

  1. their age - educational, artworld, economy wise. what situation and era they were in when they were at it, which should have had impact on their many choices.
  2. their area of expertise.
I can tally which course they teach then linked to their alma matter ( wow that will be so tedious but can be done) so I can tell for what sort of study for which sort of grad school ( U rochester PhD? MS UCSD? but it does not tell what they majored and if they switched from B(F) A to M(F) A what they started with and what and when if changed their mind.
I guess I can look up every single person’s educational background and history of their artworks, how it evolved and how it affected… gawd, I’m not doing that !!!
and it doesn’t really help any kids or parents, world a-changing, unless, well, you want to teach at Cooper forever, like that Japanese relief carving dude.</p>

<p>7400 that is. I don’t know anyone is counting but here is something art-y I did today.
my kid urged me to go see the show at one of them Chelsea place and I had a book to pick up from halfway library so went down around noon.
Saturday, sunny nice one it was seems different world! There are occasional bugaboo strollers and tall poodle with nice haircut in tow, people of all (still basically moneyed) kind are frolicking around them concrete frosted glass galleries zigzagging streets up and down.
Oh so much to see.
said show was by this guy Raymond Pettibon. I can see totally why my kid liked it so much but I don’t know what to think. There were paint stain on the floor and dripping on the wall, in very peculiar way. So I asked the gallery rep who is leading some money peoples’ tour. She said bluntly
“the artist used the gallery space as a studio to create these works. (shouldn’t everybody?)”
wow, so you don’t even need studio place once you are the bigshot, but you do so need it because you don’t have it when you are nobody. now these every drip and spots are the part of this big-o-deal show that drawings sells from 20k and up with many “sold” notes.
The gallery is in this three part layout and next to it had new paintings by Luc Tuyman. I love love his works and this was good luck for I had no idea the show was on.
of course there are no price or sales listed on his bit. You have to talk to super-duper backroom folks for that. Just curious, what does it cost to own even that small painting? </p>

<p>Gagosian had Robert Rauschenberg (packed. with trash and people came to see the art made out of trash) and few blocks away Anselm Keifer.
this guy, is this. from wikipedia

  • Anselm Kiefer was born on March 8, 1945, in Donaueschingen. He is a German painter and sculptor. He studied with Joseph Beuys during the 1970s. His works incorporate materials such as straw, ash, clay, lead, and shellac. The poems of Paul Celan have played a role in developing Kiefer’s themes of German history and the horror of the Holocaust, as have the theological concepts of Kabbalah.</p>

<p>In his entire body of work, Kiefer argues with the past and addresses taboo and controversial issues from recent history. Themes from Nazi rule are particularly reflected in his work; for instance, the painting “Margarethe” (oil and straw on canvas) was inspired by Paul Celan’s well-known poem “Todesfuge” (“Death Fugue”).</p>

<p>His works are characterised by a dull/musty, nearly depressive, destructive style and are often done in large scale formats. In most of his works, the use of photography as an output surface is prevalent and earth and other raw materials of nature are often incorporated. It is also characteristic of his work to find signatures and/or names of people of historical importance, legendary figures or places particularly pregnant with history. All of these are encoded sigils through which Kiefer seeks to process the past; this has resulted in his work being linked with a style called “New Symbolism.”</p>

<p>What you see is all his new woks, 2010s, total thirty and plus, glass case enclosed stuff with paint or some coating stiffener on it, part of an airplane, clothing, funiture, twigs… stuff all gray or brown smelling funny from shellac. leather or rusty metal, or could be BO and wooly clothing from them people jam packing the gallery.
I was hooked on Keifer after seeing image of watercolor of bloody head on my textbook long time ago.
When I saw the real thing at Met show couple years ago, I was shocked how small the painting was, like about the size of tabloid copy paper.
it is a problem that images on print or web never convey the actual feel because you really can’t tell how big, deep, real, well the real thing is.
Then again, in this gallery - bigger than the most in Chelsea but almost suffocating with all these real big big works (seemingly nothing gotten changed or any better than the works done in 40 or so years ago) it doesn’t do justice to the viewer nor the old man.
when I saw his show at MassMOCA, is was like BANG! WOW! I did not bump into anyone walking backward from the painting as looking at it all the way to the other side of the wall. I think, his stuff need to see from close, then far. can’t be done in there gallery.
People loved it thou.
they are flooding front desk girls with questions, and one of them did answer between lurking on NY post gossip page on her laptop.
“no we don’t have public bathrooms”
“yes, they are but you must talk to representative, may I have your card?”
“no, but here is the press release you can take”
the other girl was pecking from a bag of “good” kind of potato chips while speaking on the phone with either German or some other sounds like language.
so they do get to have some fun on Saturdays. We can too, for so many of us there is no room to get intimidated. mob psychology.
One grandma asked if she can please wash her hands. the snooty girl said “I am sorry” and sounded she really was.</p>

<p>7500 views thank you
it was after midnight when I left work and went around to see what’s up at Webster Hall.
The event (see page 12 post #173 ) would end at 2AM, I was hoping to get to peek some of the action from outside.
there were…
the guy holding life size plaster woman stature
about dozen of old Harley Davidson sort parked in front with the sign saying something in the line of " iron, stable, slaughter"
men were putting down the ramp over the steps in the front and brought out two more motorcycle from the inside to load in the back of rented truck.
Those have been inside were looking like brand new, shiny, evil looking tweaked up kind with fine flame patterns painted on its tanks.
It was a part of the show, this guy named Joe Slaughter is a motorcycle builder and a designer.
to have last name “Slaughter” and build scary looking bikes. fitting or what I don’t know.
there were some music playing, hear more loud noise than lyrics kind. people were coming out by groups. mostly men all different ages but equally with facial hair and leather jacket with spikes or Ramones’ symbol ( but C.J’s name going around instead of Dee Dee’s)
there were few canvas and few framed screens plopped against the wall either displayed or waiting to be picked up. paintings were bad Bronx font graffiti style. Could not figure out what screens are for, it were inked all over.
then few young kids came out speaking of Cooper this and that. One looked like could be little switters from my spying of the Cooper orientation. they went straight on 11th street without turning right where the dorm is. maybe they are not living there, then not freshmen, not little switters and his friends. or getting something to eat. a lot of places are still open, even after midnight Sundays.
I can’t and won’t say anything even he is little switters. It’d be so weird. what would I say, I know your mom from the internet !!??
just that, thinking about his mom what she might be doing this very moment when I can just see him fine right here with my eyes - in his sneakers, with keys in his pants pocket -same back pocket my kid always always put his keys on the strap, brown hoodie and looking at those paint jobs on the motorcycles with interest (if it was him that is. more likely it wasn’t, but anyways)
how she’d wish just to see him (if it was him).
I never had so much of interests or care particularly about many many many college students in the city. There are just too many of them.
now I see that, every one of them is someone’s daughter or son. from somewhere some home with parents most likely far away and thinking about them.
good night everyone, stay safe, study hard.</p>

<p>Hi Bears- it could have been him, i’ll ask him if he ever calls me. And definitely say hi next time, I may have mentioned you to him, and he is so outgoing that he wouldnt think it was weird. Dont know a brown hoodie, but he is a hoodie/sneakers kind of guy, and they all wear each others clothes. He has round Harry Potterish glasses, so you could find him from that. But really they all look kind of alike. He doesnt carry keys, that I know of. Also, his elfin gf is a blondie now.</p>

<p>Apparently the Tudor family has now settled. (see post #188)</p>

<p>[Tudor</a> family agrees to settlement - WCAX.COM Local Vermont News, Weather and Sports-](<a href=“http://www.wcax.com/Global/story.asp?S=13464481]Tudor”>http://www.wcax.com/Global/story.asp?S=13464481)</p>

<p>switters
that’s right, Harry Potter. the kid I saw had sort of half moon-sh glasses not round one, so wasn’t him. unless he borrowed Dumbledore’s. I will remember that.
G
thanks for the update.
it doesn’t tell how much each of siblings are getting. wonder who’d get that antique covered tin.
they fought over two years or so, must have spend about $2 million legal fees in between by now.</p>

<p>bears and dogs–I’m a recent lurker hereabouts, but had say–you’re post 190 is beautiful. Love all your posts, really. But this one about the sighting of the maybe (maybe not) switters’s S was super. How important to remember that every stranger on the street is deeply connected and hopefully loved by someone, somewhere.</p>

<p>Thanks BandD…nice to know that others feel that same “ternura” (tenderness) when you see students. They see themselves as so cool and streetwise but we see someone else’s kid aka someone’s heart walking around at 2 in the morning on a city street. </p>

<p>Since I am in DC I get all misty eyed when I see the really young soldiers and marines knowing some mother’s heart is breaking every day from worry. </p>

<p>Thanks also for the very interesting description of the art world in NYC…my main source for this are the occasional Sex and the City episodes when one of them worked at a gallery…was that charlotte? </p>

<p>Something that the cooper kids get that is not quite the same as kids in other cities. Pittsburgh has its artsy south side and VCU/Richmond has a a surprisingly vibrant bunch of galleries…they are very accessible to the casual visitor (me) while NY seems very intimidating and elitist…apparently you need to know how to crash these things. I am wrangling for a trip in the new year to NY…if the foreclosure mess doesn’t do us in entirely. .BandD we need to make a date so you can show me how to gate crash one of these do’s.</p>

<p>yay 7600 view and a fanmail!!
thank you madbean, your name sounds somewhat familiar… I was tempted to dig out your posts last night but wondered if you are a kid. I don’t feel good finding about kid’s dirt (if any) and talk about them in reply when I want to make point, unless it’s in same thread that everyone read or something.
anyway, my kid came home and had to listen something on youtube and my friend’s cat that I am cat sitting had to jump up on the desk and put her head onto my return/ shift key to scratch her ear. so I didn’t.
nice to see you! tell us about yourself/your kid if you are parent? you don’t have to if you don’t want to.</p>

<p>fammom!!
party time! calling all parents in NYC area, lets wear dorki-est clothes you own, no hair done, no face done (wait. that’s me always) and hit Chelsea!!!
and yes, we shall go to Magnolia bakery and eat them cupcakes! we do City, no Sex.
any takers?</p>

<p>Hi Bs&Ds. Thanks for the kind welcome. Of course you can look up my old posts any time–many posts about S1’s school. I’m an old mom from the other coast from you, with S1 a happy film school junior in college, and S2 who is a great mixed up arts kid who is not sure what to do with his unique interests. He’s a HS senior and applying to an offbeat array of programs and colleges right now. Too many portfolios! Too many supplements! I’m stressed, so I hang out on cc.</p>

<p>ARRGGHH, if only I were in the NY area. another reason to hate Florida.</p>

<p>redbug
here is the reason no matter what you should love/hate? Florida.
