summer! Jello! when you have picnic BBQ potluck kiddie parties ice-cream social and happened to eat them, think of the great guy who invented and boxed powdered gelatin already but did no care to promote them.
he was way ahead of time. locomotives, steels, phone cable are dead or dyeing but Jello is here and forever…

fifteen hundred’s post: greenbacks- coming soon !!! (or not?)

P3T the super duper moderator, if you are out there
do you have a way to figure out how far pages viewers are actually “view” ing?
I really don’t think anyone would read this far but if they do, that makes my day and will keep bumping forever reporting Cooper happenings or else.

you can tell me to stop anytime.
thank you in advance

happy fifteen hundred views and day(night) job done, time to post !!
be sure to open the PDF to read lovely letter from Peter Cooper himself.
fuzzy scanned type letters add flavor. I did not find bad spelling Peter is known for, or NYT edited for him or his henchman wrote it as he recited? Either way these are the days politician send letters written on the paper to newsroom so they can publish it so public could read them on the paper made out of eh, paper.

THE GREENBACK CAMPAIGN.; LETTER FROM PETER COOPER--HE WILL REMAIN IN THE FIELD AS A CANDIDATE FOR THE PRESIDENCY--WHAT THE FINANCIAL POLICY OF THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE. AN INDEPENDENT RALLY IN CHICAGO-- ONLY A FEW HUNDRED PERSONS PRESENT--A DECIDED FAILURE. - The New York Times;

^but universal currency that made out of eh, paper was weird thought and those supported the idea was ridiculed by public.
now wasn’t he ahead of time?
wish he could see how much green dollars are valued and used now by, well, universe.

sixteen hundred!
did you know that Peter Cooper carried around rubber donuts pillow nicknamed “Peter Cooper”

Traveled around NY with an inflatable seat cushion ring to cushion his rear while visiting classes. The ring was made by Charles Goodyear, a friend and fellow inventor, pictured right next to Peter in the “ Men of Progress” painting. A ring of this sort, and perhaps the historic ring itself, is behind the bar at McSorley’s Ale House Saloon, near the cash-register. It sits upon “Peter Cooper’s chair.”

Charles is, of course Goodyear tire’s, though company is named after him after he is gone.
Now, McSorley’s Ale House is around the corner from Cooper Union. I will do the field trip.

well, the vise device was rightfully suspicious, now whole system is lopsided and the area the hefty metal pin meet the wood joint have been caved in and jagged.
the board is pretty washed out streaking with water stain with few cracks.
yet
there came a tot wearing croc sandals hops on one end and either his au pair or too young side of hippie vibe mom was on the other, start going up and down.
I wanted to tell them to Stop! you are gonna get hurt!
(you better not sue Cooper after the kid’s head got split open from falling hitting cement pavement with full force, yes?)

The rule in the NYC and here CC is to never interfare with other people’s parenting style.
I walked away crossing my fingers.
have not heard anyone dead yet.

PS
no sign of dumpster… missed it already or wait until show ends???

seventeen hundred views!

said ale house opens at 11AM and I assumed it was more of a museum, like Fraunces tavern in the lower Manhattan.
but NO, it is all gone drinking hole in the bright daylight.
everyone is drinking, everything is beer colored; yellow, amber, brown - old photos, newspapers, posters, gadgets, artifacts, rows of dust coated wishbones, etc etc. only thing on the wall that looked contemporary is “choking” poster with CPR guide, so out of place but it had to be posted, I guess.

I asked where Peter’s chair is, bartender pointed behind, on the cabinet was an old chair covered with other old dusty stuff, told it was indeed the chair Peter always sat in the back room. after his death, it was retired and put on the display. No. nothing was heard of the donuts pillow, sorry.
oh, well.
I think, to get better idea of what all other items ( sure they are not junks, right?) I must know the history of the city better and maybe like drinking beer alot.
on the window was the slogan,

" McSorley’s
since 1854
we were here before you were born" no doubt.

Cooper teeterboard is now, broken and officially down. tomorrow is the last day of the art show.
to be continued.

eighteen hundred!
this is the said painting which is in the national portrait gallery DC
Peter is on the red chair center, next to him is Charles Goodyear (the donut pillow to the tire guy)
I have no idea who all other progressive men are… they must be tight as Peter, no?

Dear old friends and new,

I have received a message from bears and dogs who sends her regards and is very happy this thread is approaching 2000 posts. Her life is filled with intrigue and mystery but don’t you worry…she will be back to sing the praises of Peter Cooper and his donut pillow.

twenty one hundred and plus!!
finally off the hook and back in posting! thanks drae for the message.
Summer vacation for NYC kids started on June 29th at last.
Not for those few and chosen.
Summer Outreach pre-college 6 week had began.
kids are coming into shiny new building from all those boroughs plus Westchester, Long Island NJ and beyond
my spying career started when my kid was in 6th grade or so.
one early Saturday in May;the review day, I would stood and spy. cars with NJ CT plates parents helping taking giant canvas out of the trunk. I was stunned how these rising HS seniors looked mature, posed, their works are like, totally Cooper-ing already. Appalled, intimidated, wondered if pre college is this hard, ( one in ten-twelve is accepted) how bad the college itself could be?

fast forward six or so years. yep, been there done that. My kid is now older than all these kids coming for the class.
His works might never be good enough to get in Cooper but done some Outreach and you know, he liked Saturday class kids ( no review to get in, open for all) and teachers better in comparison.
I don’t any longer wow-ed by pretentious know it all-y fashionable pretty boys and girls wearing head gear and fabric around neck or waist just so and having nothing dumpy nor badly designed from the portfolio case to the ball point pen they’d fill up app form.
What really count is, should be the work itself, more than how you’d present them, or how you talk it out, but in person review, it is not always the case - when kids’ skill levels are quite high and about the same after years of prep from other programs and parents pouring $ in it for expected return of free tuition and bragging right…

Out of these 35-40sh pre-college kids, maybe 2 would get in comes Dec. ED, another 3-4 maybe RD. Some believes summer pre college is the key, yet again it conflicts with other high powered summer programs and you must be commutable (no housing)
Unfair? eh?
Sorry, Peter originally built the school for NYC kids, he had no idea how much deserving kids are there in hundred plus years later in FL, CA, TX, Hawaii.

Good luck to all for the next season!!

my kid and I were painting in the park together and it was one of those rare occasion he would talk in full sentences.
alas! Cooper dumpster was there and gone sometime in late May.
“why didn’t you tell me!?!? "
“why shoulda?” (he does not care/follow CC at all)
" what was in it !?”
" like, s**t. totally whack, whicker chair, bad paintings, wood, nothing really"
he and his buddy dived already, not much is missed.
oh well.

Edit. Cooper summer Outreach has two classes, 4weeks drawing intensive for rising juniors or seniors, 6weeks pre college for rising seniors only. If I remember correctly, each take 35 or some kids out of 300 plus applicants.

happy twenty two hundred views and happy fourth of July!!

In the lobby of the new academic building, there is an awful ugly folding table and on it is an awful beaten up foam-core panel -both could’ve purchased from the K-mart around the corner- sign that says

Every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. with the exception of holidays
The maximum tour size is 15
You must arrive at the college 10 minutes prior to your scheduled tour time
You will be asked to show photo ID
Wear comfortable shoes
There may be limited access to certain classrooms and working labs
Photography is strictly limited ( limited? did I misread (again)? anyway)

yes! you can spy the shiny building by calling Christine Romero 212 353 4100 or email to cromero@cooper.edu
I did spy already while the show was up but why not! called, emailed last week.
of course noone picks up phone nor send reply.
Cooper vortex…

I have some form of dyslexia for sure.
Met roof’s twin brothers’ bamboo piece had explanation (sort of) panel on the wall and in it said, those bamboo came from GA and a century old forest in NC ( hmmm? was it SC? anyway) which doesn’t make me feel any better but special offer: guided tour tickets are selling like hotcakes!
go early in the morning to the ground level education entrance to get timed ticket
10 bucks each.
You could NOT go walk with flipflops, sandals or heels. Don’t go in skirt if do not want to mob of spectators down below admiring your old panties or no panties.
No walker, cane, wheelchair, but somehow, seeing eye dogs are allowed. it is narrow slippery slopey shaky bamboo stairs and slopes, how could a dog can lead a person!?
anything for Met’s operational budget, but nooo, I don’t want to buy into it, I still don’t get the whole thing…

twenty three!! yippee!!

from arch newsletter 09-10 I picked up in the lobby

2010 Benjamin Menschel fellows honor is awarded to pair of arch students
this is from their proposal

 • during the final weeks of the semester, with the school open 24hours, students take refuge under desks or on the floors of classrooms seeking an hour of uncomfortable un - refreshing sleep. (no doubt!) our project will address this problem by providing a space to gather, rest , and recharge. (in the Lincoln room perhaps?)

smarty, I know you are lurking, come say something!!
