We’ll be there in August and have never been. Tell me all about it!
That’s exciting! Just for vacation?
We had a lovely time in Copenhagen but it’s been a bit. The family favorites were:
Climbing the spire of the Church of Our Savior
Visiting Amelianborg Palace
Walking around Nyhavn and doing a boat tour
Our favorite meals:
Sadly we were only there for a long weekend.
Family wedding
Yay! My favorite city. My husband works for a Danish company so we’re there a lot. Mostly, you want to eat Copenhagen has some of the best food in the world.
Some favorites:
Restaurant Koefoed
Ancestrale
The Olive Kitchen
Restaurant Schønnemann (traditional, touristy, but you should try)
Have been to many of these: The 38 Best Restaurants in Copenhagen, Denmark - Eater
We did a city tour on our first visit a few years ago, booked through Viator. It was a good way to learn our way around the city and the tour guide had good suggestions of what to do.
Recommend Rosenborg Castle (I think you buy tickets online), the National Museum, the Tower at Our Savior’s Church and a walk around Christiana. Take a boat tour if you have time. Skip the mermaid, it’s dumb. Oh and don’t miss Tivoli Gardens!
Have a wonderful time! Copenhagen is easy to get around, the people are lovely, everyone speaks English and I find it just the most livable of European cities. Hoping to spend a few years there after S25 graduates from high school
I just wanted to suggest to make sure your hotel has air conditioning. We were there in July a few years ago (and will be there this June), and it was HOT. Many of the museums and attractions do not have air conditioning, so you need to be prepared.
It is a super neat city, and we enjoyed it. We are only there a quick 24 hours this summer before going on a cruise.
Hmmmm. It’s an Airbnb, and there’s no AC. But I’m a guest and not paying so I’ll keep my mouth shut. But also, I’m from Texas, and I’ll tell you that temps that a lot of people consider hot are no big deal to me. I hope that’s the case here.
I think the issue is it is hot for Copenhagen (not Texas hot, or most anywhere in the US hot) but a museum in August with no AC is stifling. Heat waves in Europe are no joke.
But you will have a great time! Check out trip advisor and Rick Steves travel forum. Lots of good suggestions.
You need to leave me a secret message somewhere in the City. We will be there for the first time in September! But only 2 nights, and I haven’t made hotel reservations yet…
I wish this thread was from a week ago, ds21 just got back from spring break there with a bunch of friends. He loved the people and food, took in a soccer game, they stayed in an Airbnb.
We were visiting family who lived there and bought one of those city passes. It had free entry to so many museums, and given that it’s not a huge place, if you wandered into one and felt done with it an hour later, it was easy to move on. We liked the art museum (statensmuseum for kunst), the botanical gardens (great place to stroll) and design museum quite a bit. And we still talk about a special exhibit that was in the war museum (which we only visited because we were in the neighborhood.
I would think that Louisiana Art Museum wouldn be terrific at that time of year. That would take the better part of a day.
We enjoyed torvehallen for breakfasts and lunch. Tivoli should be fun (but more touristy) that time of year.
It’s such a lovely city, easy to get around, and friendly. Envying you!
It has been a while for me too but here are some to dos:
- The Carlsberg museum for me was a better visit than the national museum. https://glyptoteket.dk/ but my favorite to visit just for ambience was the Louisiana Museum (Louisiana Museum of Modern Art). You can buy a return train ticket along with admission to the museum from the train station.
- Tivoli is fine but frankly, does not compare to top level amusement parks in the US. I would skip.
- I visited the royal museum too. It was ok…the crown jewels were pretty awesome.
- I enjoyed Christiana a lot…reminded me of certain parts of SFO from back in the day. What you choose to do there is your business, not mine. Lol. Freetown Christiania - Wikipedia
- Nyhavn – tons of bars and restaurants. I recommend this place: frontpage - Det Lille Apotek . Try the duck.
- Consider a trip to Malmo.
Lots of great recommendations already and some repeated here. Have fun!!
We were there a few years ago. Lovely place.
Hygge! We did a free walking tour and then walked around by ourselves. Boy, did we walk a lot that day!! The tour was good - gave you a good base to start from and then you can go back and visit what you want to really see. Also did a boat tour. Mermaid is quite a walk and definitely not worth it ! Tivoli gardens are cute - we were there later in the afternoon/evening and it was pretty with all the lights on. But not necessarily a MUST-DO.
