Cord Cutting the cable TV

We dropped Directv two years ago when Hurricane Irma repositioned our dish. We did trials of HuluLive and YouTubeTV. We much preferred the YouTubeTV interface. At that time, YouTubeTv was the only service available to us with unlimited DVR though that may gave changed. I really love that feature as I can listen to late night monologues on my phone while I walk the dog or catch up on a series sitting on the patio. Last football season we added Sling Orange so we could watch RedZone. We are getting ready to pick up Sling again and drop YouTubeTV. I love having no contracts to fulfill.

We have the fastest internet available as H works from home sometimes. We never have issues with streaming, even when the kids are home for holidays. We had many issues with Directv and the weather.

We dropped the landline back in 2008 at the beginning of the election season. We were getting so many calls from candidates. I have never missed the landline.

A “landline” is useful for us. Someone can call our house and talk to either one of us or leave a message either one of us can access. Have become skilled at hanging up on unwanted calls (I do not bother with any niceties).

On a related topic- so much mail can hit the recycling bin without ever making it past the garage.

Sure wish there was a way to opt out of that, though, as it seems so wasteful.

Do you have a smart tv? We had the syncing issue and had to reboot. That meant for our Sony holding down the power button for 6 seconds and then turn it back on. It will go through the reboot stuff. We had gone through C.S. with an online chat and whatever he had us do didn’t work. Our son is the one who told us to reboot. LOL.

Catolog Choice website allows you to opt out of many mailings. We had both sets of parent’s mail forwarded to us, what a nightmare of catalogs for suckers. I saved it up and about once a quarter would sit down and go through the website to get off the lists.

Thanks for the tip, @somemom!

I saw your posting about Ruku or other online streaming not working. Have you ever upgrade your Routers and Cable modem? 60 meg is very high speed already for home equipment because they only go to 100 meg for most users. Unless you have upgraded every device and infrastructure in your home to 1G, use a 1G router won’t help. However, older equipment, especially cable modem, will hamper the speed on your LAN and internet access. You should check your cable modem and router, if it is over 5 years old, replace them will help.

Use a speed test software to ascertain the internet speed in the home is the first step everyone should do.

You should also aware, a hardware(cable connected to the router or switch) connected device to the internet will give you the true speed of the ISP connection. If you test the speed on a Wifi device, the speed is about 50% of the “promised” speed.

We haven’t had a landline for many years but had Directv ($160/mo) so we could have cable at home and at our summer home. Then we couldn’t figure out a challenge at the summer home so we decided to ditch Directv and go with our internet company (which was $90/mo) who also provides cable. A special for $70/mo ($112 all in) provides internet and cable with one box. We are using Roku sticks for all other TVs successfully and get live TV with the Xfinity live app on roku. I already had Netflix and prime. This isn’t really cutting the cord, but even colleagues at work who have moved to YouTube TV are considering this option as they are not pleased with YouTube TV. We are a gaggle of geeks:) so we research the heck out of stuff like this. Internet around us is still almost $100 then you add $50 for YouTube tv.

So D dumped cable and is just getting internet. I wanted her to have local channels so got her Leaf antenna. She gets nothing with it but a few Spanish language channels. So disappointed. Hoping once leaves drop she might have shot at nearest local network affiliate.

I turned in the boxes last week and thus far am just using the already existing Netflix and Hulu (the cheap one); once we are comfortable with those two and need more options, we may do Sling, but I realised that I don’t need to pay for it all at once, I can take on one at a time and I’ve not previously used Hulu much

Yes, @somemom . We only purchase Sling when we want it. That’s pretty nice. We have friends who get Slings little package that is about $25 a month. I have no idea what that includes.

So we did this about 2, years ago with 5 tvs. Are monthly taxes with rental was like $65. /month. We already had Netflix and an Amazon prime account. Got HD attennas for each TV (Costco). This is for local channels. You can get them with Hulu Live also but to me faster just to change the input
Hulu live is great for sports. I can get everything I want and more. There is no channel I crave for after having Hulu Live and new one’s I enjoy. I think the only channel I can’t get it the real Weather channel. Highly recommend trying it out. It takes a little getting used to. They even have a new channel guide finally.

We pay for monthly Sling because Mr. needs his CNN and CNBC. There is a ton of channels included, but we rarely watch TV other than Mr.'s morning watching.

@BunsenBurner what is your monthly sling bill…and what does it include…just a sampling would be fine.

We have never just gotten Sling. We just purchase by the month for things we want to watch…like the Olympics or World Series

@thumper1 this may help…new Cnet article that lists costs and channels for all the internet tv options. See the chart half way down the page.

H is thrilled that YouTube tv now has ACC, SEC, Big10 network at his disposal, among others.

Our last credit card bill shows it was $30… I can only tell that it has CNN, CNBC, and BBC World News. No idea what else is there… that’s all we watch.

@gosmom. That’s why I got Hulu live. Besides all the movies etc it’s great for sports. I can get just about any game I want without buying a special sports package. College football /basketball and the pro games is my season. I don’t think there been a game that I wanted to watch that I couldn’t in two years.

@knowsstuff we tried Hulu…but the constant buffering drove us crazy. Switched to YouTube and have had no problems. ymmv…

Hmmm… We really have not had buffering in the last 6 months. I know they are working on that. But the list of sports is unreal and what I wanted. I will check out you tube live just to compare but do far we are good. So nice to save like $150/month for us. Which is crazy if you think about it.
