Cord Cutting the cable TV

We’ve got the $25 Sling package - we get ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, CNN, HGTV, Food network, TBS, TNT, Bloomberg, and a bunch of other channels. During college basketball season, we add the sports package for an additional $5/month.

This thread inspired me - we bought an indoor/outdoor antenna last winter, but we couldn’t get the tv to pick up any channels. It didn’t make sense since we live in the DC/Baltimore region but we are surrounded by huge trees. We set it aside and had it on our TO DO list. However, for months I stewed over our ridiculously expensive Verizon bill when, aside from live sports (and I mean pretty much every sport as dh and my two boys will always find something to watch), we don’t really watch much regular tv. Most of our viewing is via Netflix and Amazon Prime. So today, I got out that antenna, found a long coaxial cable, hooked it up to our bedroom tv and put the antenna by the window where there aren’t any trees obstructing. We got a ton of channels, both DC and Baltimore!

Dh wants to figure out how to hook up the antenna to the cable that feeds all of our tvs. But I am ready to just hook it up to our main tv for the moment, and cut the cord with Verizon. I’m still deciding which company to try first - probably Hulu. OF course, D17 will kill me b/c she asked me to record the entire season of Bachelor in Paradise for her while she is studying abroad this semester. If I cut the cord, there goes all her previously recorded episodes on the DVR LOL. No big loss IMHO.

I’m embarrassed to say just how much our Verizon bill is, especially considering how little we watch TV! I can’t wait to drop all but internet.

We don’t use the dvr almost at all with Hulu Live. It seems like everything is there no matter when we want to watch it so check that out. But you get a decent size dvr with Hulu live and you can add to it as well. There are also over the air OTA recorders you can get for your regular channels also. Also most things like that are on regular you tube or somewhere in the cloud.
You can get a rooftop of attenna and get it to all your tvs but better to hire someone for that since you have some wiring to to. This is why I just got HD attenna to each TV. I was also able to hide them and most people don’t even know we are using them. But you can get your local channels with most of the companies also.
