Cordless phones "out of range"

I have had a series of cordless phone issues with my parent’s phones. There was their original set, a new phone from Costco, another old set of mine, and now another new phone from Costco.

Each set works for a while, then one hand set will not work, saying “out of range or power at base”

Switch handsets and the other ones work, for a while, but then they go bad, too. The base is not out of power, it is lit up and working, but the handsets are not.

After 4 sets in 3 years I am feeling like it is not the phones, it is them or their house. Is there anything weird we should be checking?

Have you tried replacing the batteries?

Are any of those handsets or bases located next to microwave ovens or wireless routers?

If they are, there may be cross-conflicts because cordless phones may share the same frequencies with those other household devices.

Have there been electrical issues from the outlets they are powered from?

How large is the house? Was it a pre-war house with thick walls filled with metal piping/bracing?

I agree about changing the batteries. I didn’t know that that was something one should pay attention to until a few years ago.

From V-Tech’s website -

And this site has a more complicated solution, which may or may not apply to your situation. I don’t know whether these solutions only apply to V-Tech phones, though. I agree, I’d check the batteries before anything else.

The range on these phones is not that far even if fully charged.
Some phones apparently even display " out of range" while they are * on * the charger!
