Core Requirements

what are they?

I don’t believe McGill has any, though I could be wrong. I think all the requirements are contained in your major. Ba/Sc requires an integrative course, but that’s all I know of.

i heard something about some people having to take chamistry and physics
but i could be wrong

there are freshman program requirements if you’re in the faculty of sciences, which is basically pre-req courses for your major and can include any/all of chem/physics/bio/calc/psychology

How do UOs register for language courses if they have to wait for placement testing in August?

I’m wondering this too–do we just not register until after we take the placement test?

You should start registering before you take placement exams. By the time you take the exams and get your scores back, the good classes would most likely be filled up. You can even log onto minerva and check out the remaining spots in some classes. Your best shot is to call or email the advisors and ask how to approach and choose your classes.

For language, you can get a rough estimate of which level you will be placed in during your conversation wiht an advisor. Just tell them your current level, and if you’re in AP/IB for the language.

but what are core requirements?
are there any for faculty of arts, or can u just start taking whichever classes you want right off the bat (prerequisite courses pertaining to your major of course)?
Or do you have to take certain english classes, or math/science classes?

Okay, cool, thanks, how would I get in contact with an advisor?

Do the students just get assigned an advisor or can they go ahead and sign up for courses without one?

When can U0s start registering??

helloooo…
Can someone answer my actual question?
What are the core requirements for students in the faculty of arts?
Are there any required classes besides Necessary Major prerequisites

bump please

Check out section 5.3.5 of the 2007-2008 Calendar. I guess “Calendar” is the Canadian term for “catalog”. The requirements for Arts are really easy, especially when compared with many US schools, and there are 3 options (including one in French).

Ok, once you’re a McGill student, you should use this month, and all of your summer getting used to reading every page in the Calendar and browse every little corner of the McGill website. You should definitely read every page of your faculty in the Calendar and go to the newly admitted students website. Core requirements for every faculty are listed in your Calendar and online.
Please, talk to an advisor before registering ( Registration, unless you’re Quebecois, starts on Augist 1st or 2nd). If you’re U0, start taking core requirement courses. If you’re enrolling as U1, show them your credits or something, then talk to a department advisor (since you’re suppoed to declare your major as U1) before choosing your courses.

When are we getting advisors?

You dont “get advisors”. Go online, find the website of your faculty and there will be a list of daculty advisors and department advisors. You’ll have to choose from the list and contact them yourself. Or, you can go to the first year student page and look for first year advisors (for U0 students). A big characteristic of McGill is its bureaucracy. No free cookie will be dropping from the sky into your hands, you’ll have to seek the info on your own and ask on your own. Also, read the new students handbook that came in the mail along with the Caldenar. That book helps a lot.
