So randomly this morning I started having cloudy vision in one eye–I’m high risk for retinal detachment so after it didn’t go away by lunch, I started calling eye doctors and finally one was like OMG get in here now. Luckily, no retinal detachment, but apparently I have corneal hypoxia (aka I suffocated my cornea). I guess my contacts (Acuvue 2) are an older brand and don’t let a lot of oxygen pass through, so even though I take care of them and don’t sleep in contacts, they still aren’t good. I have a follow up appointment and he said it’s 99% I’ll be able to continue wearing contacts once this heals, although I"ll have to switch brands. Some googling indicated it’s really common, but I’ve never heard of anyone having it

Anyone have this before (or their kids have it)?

I had it. An eye doctor also told me I was starting to grow extra blood vessels in my eye’s search for oxygen, and that the vessels would start to cross my visual field if I didn’t stop wearing contacts. I stopped immediately.

Calla–mine definitely didn’t say that! He seems to think giving my eyes a break and then switching to a more gas permeable brand should do the trick since I have never had had problems with it in the past. I have a follow up appointment with him tomorrow to see how it’s progressing–putting eye drops in and not wearing my contacts since the appt and the cloudiness is already gone

I’ve also been told by eye doctors to not wear contacts for more than 12 hours a day. I almost never followed that rule! I think my eyes felt much better when I did, though. (I mostly wear glasses right now).

I had this. They took pictures of my corneas and showed me the blood vessels growing into them. Had to stop wearing contacts. The blood vessels went away.

Lergnom, my vessels went away too, thank goodness!

I’d been wearing gas permeable contacts when this happened, though I must admit it was 25 - 30 years ago and I’m sure they’ve evolved since then. I guess my eyes just didn’t blink enough or something. At any rate, they were starved for oxygen.

I woke up this morning and the cloudiness + blurred was gone, but I think I am having an allergic reaction to the drops he gave me. I was having stinging and pain last night every 3-5 minutes so it would water uncontrollably, but I assumed that was just healing. I put the drops in first thing this morning and it’s stinging extremely bad. Just had to go ILONAA for work since there’s no way I could drive the 45+ minutes to work. Have a follow up later today but I am going to try to bump it up earlier. Now is when I miss my parents and wish the BF was here :(

Update: apparently the misery is actually healing. Was prescribed some corticosteroid/antibiotic eye drops to try and relieve the discomfort and speed up the healing…stinging/burning/excessive tearing is gone today, but still pretty light sensitive. Had to stay home from work because I can’t drive til this is cleared up.
