Cornell Class of 2020 Early Decision Discussion

@ArthurDent42 Contrary to what you’d might expect, not all the freshman writing seminars are conventional English classes. In fact, the classes range from ecology to history to philosophy and government, and I’m sure you’ll find something more of interest to you than literary criticism in there! Here, have a look: http://fws.arts.cornell.edu/viewcourses/index.cfm

@daniel98609 Philosophy, awesome!! Glad to hear that. I enjoy English only when it’s on a subject I’m interested in.

Yo TWO QUESTIONS: Does anyone know if you apply AS a double major or do you decide that after getting accepted? (for CALS)

And what if your supplement essay exceeds the maximum word limit and you can’t possibly shorten it? Is there a way around the word limit?

@Koboko I know that your major won’t affect admission even if you apply as a double major. It’s the school that affects that. As far as the word limit, I’ve heard its fine but only if you don’t go too far over the word limit. how many words is yours?

@Gatortristan About 1,000 words…but I think it’s pretty dang strong.

@Gatortristan and @Koboko Parent of 2015 grad accepted to Cornell here - the Common App site strictly enforces the word limits on all essays. I guess they didn’t in the past, but started to a couple of years ago.

@hs2015mom Ohhh okay thank you for letting us no!

know* wow…#cornellbound #grammaronpoint

Wait so you can or can’t go over the word limit? I thought the words would stop appearing/be cut off if you tried to type over the word limit on Common App (of course I haven’t tried that yet myself). Even if I was “allowed” to go over the word limit (already over 1,000 in ms word and still far from being done, I chose a big “problem to solve” [prompt 4], gonna have to cut it down), I wouldn’t do it. Sounds a bit risky considering my chances are already nil from the start.

When are they going to release the class of 2019 ed stats? I’ve googled hundreds of times but have found nothing…

@ArthurDent42 You are correct; you cannot go over the word limit. If you try to paste in something longer than the word limit, you get an error message and are told to delete the extra words.

@ArthurDent42 Check the Cornell Class of 2019 ED Results thread. not a great sample but its cc kids who applied and gives a decent showing

@Gatortristan I did, all I see are people who are super humans who got in, people who are super humans who didn’t get in, people like me who got in, and people like me who didn’t get in…I have no clue what to think. But of course this issue has already been debated heavily on CC…oh well.

haven’t started my common app yet but i have a really good topic to write about. probably going to write it this weekend and start the supplements next week.

I went to an information session the other day with Cornell and other selective schools and they all highly stressed how important the supplemental essay is because it really helps them see how you fit into the school.

@Gatortristan I started my common app in mid August, but I’m making slow progress on my common app essay, I’m a slow writer and I have to check myself often because I loose focus easily. Got it down to less than 650 though, and almost done with the first draft. I really want to get done with the Cornell essays and move on to teacher reqs and my other school’s application and scholarships…even though November 1st is far off, I feel like it’s tomorrow…

Is it mean to say that I’m glad I’m a bit ahead between the two of us? I feel like most other applicants are already done with their app and are way ahead…

Knowing myself I’ll be done with my application a week before it’s due lol and no I feel you xD @ArthurDent42

Do you know what prompt you’re going to do?

Also, what do you think is more important, the supplemental essays or the common app essay?

@ArthurDent42 for Cornell, the supplemental essay is very important. I think more so than common app essay.

@ArthurDent42 For the supplemental essay I’m doing the one for human ecology since that’s where I’m applying and for the common app I’m doing the one about having a background and identity

@ArthurDent42 for Cornell, the supplemental essay is very important. I think more so than common app essay.
