Cornell ED Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

A record number of 5,384 students applied early decision for admission to Cornell’s Class of 2021, representing a 10.3% percent increase from last year

23.3% legacy and 13.4% athletes. if one assumes no overlap between legacies and athletes, that makes the ED admit rate around 16% for the unhooked (non-athlete/non-legacy) candidate.

Yeah that’s barely better than RD. LOL

does that 23.3% count for sibling legacy as well or just for parent/grandparent legacy?

@quietdesperation I know of at least 1 overlap athelet/legacy.

@AlexDad2016 I think the ED admit rate at most of these schools is deceiving. IMO, the big advantage of ed is the applicant pool is a little weaker. I have to guess RD is going to be tougher when all the people denied at yale, harvard, mit, etc start applying. If it’s your D’s top school, you may want to consider having her write (or having her guidance counselor communicate) that if she gets in RD, she will attend.

@foxlilian I’m sure there are a number of overlaps but I’m equally sure there are other types of candidates that are admitted during the ED round at a higher rate than the RD round.

@quietdesperation Yes, we will get the ongoing interest/commitment letter in, but the odds aren’t great.

@quietdesperation and @AlexDad2016 Cornell Common Data Set says that an applicant’s level of interest is not considered. Have you heard something different? I know, for example, that Michigan considers level of an applicant’s interest and the regional admissions rep encourages emails or letters of expression of interest and a commitment for those that are deferred—which could turn a deferral into an otfer of admission/acceptance. However I don’t know the value of doing that for Cornell.

@trackmbe3 If my D was deferred, we planned to send an update to the school. the update was to have a cover letter which would have indicated that if admitted, she’d attend. This helps improve Cornell’s yield, which is a statistic us news uses to rank schools.

the body of the update would have included, strong 1q and 2q grades, any new academic honors, updates on her 4-year social justice project and a new out-of-school project that tied to her major. The idea is to have the update tie to the overall story told in the common app. I’d suggest this approach for all schools but the updates have to be meaningful (not, for example, I took a family vacation to the grand canyon).

good luck!

@trackmbe3 I don’t know the value either, but we are planning on doing it anyway.

^anybody know the student admitted date for 2017? Trying to plan my trip and hope we see each other!

like a whole list in April or something?

@shebelongsinny Heyyy I got deferred from FSAD! So sad :frowning:

Hi!! for those who were deferred who are sending a letter of continued interest, when/what is a good date to send it? and do we just send it to the general admissions committee?

anyone from the middle east, guys ?

Anyone know about fiber science? What gpa would I need to get my foot in the door given I have extraordinary extracurriculars such as Intel ISEF google science fair and a patent pending invention directly related to fibers, and helping the community.

Question for ED applicants to SHA. Did you submit a resume? I just saw the requirement on the website but the portal said all my requirements are complete. I’m worried this kills any chance since a resume was not done. Please advise.

@hamsamcam17 Read somewhere that it was about 20% deferred for CO20. Relatively speaking, much lower than schools like Princeton and Harvard that defer upwards of 60% of candidates. So guys like you and me have a chance

Anyone know about importance of interview at Cornell? Unfortunately decided not to take the opportunity ED round, which is probably why I got deferred. But I took it RD round and it went brilliantly. Could it be the missing link to my application?

Did anyone on this thread get accepted to HumEc? I see lots of deferrals but no acceptances.
