Does anyone know
- How difficult it is at Cornell to join the EMS CLUB if you already have the certification?
- How many hours per semester are required to volunteer?
Does anyone know
While I don’t have any insight into the Cornell EMS club, I applaud that the club exists, and love that your student is interested in joining.
There is a lot of information about the club on their webpage, including the time commitment: Prospective Members – Cornell University Emergency Medical Service
And yes, it is a competitive club.
My son reached out to Director of it, current senior staying there next year for a Masters program I think it was. Believe she said they take 10 a year and they announce when they are having info sessions.
Mine also has National EMT license, she made it sound like they are looking for fit and that wouldn’t necessarily take you to front of list. He ended up enrolling elsewhere though.
Ironically we saw them in action during admit day responding to a call while we were in dining hall. There is a FB group for Cornell Pre-Meds, that’s where I tracked down more information and got him contact to reach out to.
As a parent of a student that pursued this path at another university I can tell you it was the most valuable experience of their entire college career. I have the utmost respect for those that answer the call to serve the community that surrounds their campus. Thank you for doing what you do.
I was on a volunteer fire department in college and it was hands down one of the most formative experiences of my college time. Leadership, empathy, and the reality of how privileged I was to be in the carefree life of a college student were just some of the lessons… I was a math/cs major and now work in tech, after leaving college I’ve never been back on a fire truck or ambulance, but sometimes wonder what if…
The only advice I would give is to keep an eye on their mental health, particularly as they experience the more traumatic side of emergency medicine. 20 years ago there wasn’t as much support there and it’s only until recently with a therapist that I started to work through some things I had been holding in for a while.
Thank you all for taking your time to respond and provide valuable insights into your own personal experiences and information about the club. We also hear the same that they look for fit and competitive club. Thank you all!
