Cornell Engineering vs. SUNY Buffalo Engineering

Hello, thanks for taking time to read this thread. This website has given me a lot of info over the years.

I have recently been accepted to an MS/PhD in civil engineering at Cornell. However, they are unable to offer me financial aid ($29,000 a year). Many people tell me once I’m there I should get a research assistantship quickly. Is cornell worth the risk because it is so prestigious?

On the other hand I have been accepted to University at Buffalo with a full tuition scholarship plus $15,000 a year working as a teaching assistant. This is a great deal I don’t think I can turn down.

I grew up outside of buffalo and know the area very well. I also have spent a lot of time in Ithaca because I had a couple friends go to cornell (who aren’t doing great job wise). So the regions are probably equally fun socially for me.

I’m going for geotechnical engineering and UB has one of the largest earthquake simulators in the country which is a plus.

All opinions welcome and appreciated!

I’d contact Cornell and check on finances. If they are non-comptetive, go to SUNY.

My dd is graduating in May with an EE. She’s coming back to California for her job. If you go to SUNY-you’ll be ready to also access California earthquake institutions for jobs later.

Thank you both for your thoughts!
