Cornell ILR Transfer Recs

I am getting one rec from my English TA, who is great and knows me well, and debating over the second one.

Option 1: I can try to get a rec from my Economics TA. This would be nice, because economics is the core of the ILR curriculum. However, the class has 600 people in it, and the TA is very removed - she comes in and review quickly and it is evident that she does not care about the class. I’m doing a little better than the rest of the class, but still expecting an A- at the end of the course. I can’t ask the professor for it, since I haven’t stood out at all and don’t see a way to do so in a 600-person lecture hall.

Option 2: I can definitely get a great red from my Calc I teacher. There are only 30 people in the class, and I am definitely top 3, if not the best. I struggled with Calc in high school (got C’s and D’s), but I never gave up, and understand it and appreciate it inside and out. I’ve been acind the tests and quizzes, and will definitely get an A. I asked her about a rec, and she said she can def write me one, and that she can tell when someone just gets the right answers or really understands. It would look good too, that I struggled and persevered (I won’t need calc for the ILR curriculum). However, I worry that an eco rec would weight more in the process (because of how important it is to the curriculum), and they might look down on the fact that I took so long to get calc - obviously I’d be doing well after taking calc a second time.

(For the record, the calc I took in HS was AP Calc BC, I got a 70, 3 on the BC/4 AB)

Which rec should I get?

The Calc rec without a doubt. The particular subject that the rec comes from is less important than you think. Besides math is an important subject for pretty much all disciplines, even if not directly so, because it shows analytical ability.

I’m not so sure that its even legitimate to get a rec from a TA.

Well, my English TA is getting it signed by the professor. I am sure the admission committee understands that it is almost impossible to stand out in a lecture hall or 400 or 600, in an intro freshman course where there is no discussion.

I got mine for ILR from econ and english professors. I knew both of them very well though.

TA’s are actually allowed to write recs for students

It’s legit…I have a friend who had her TA write one of her med school rec letters…the prof signed off on it as well and she’s now a first year med student :-)

I wish I would have known that when I was getting recs for Cornell.
